Comments
I've enabled comments and in less than 24 hours I found my first spam comment. This does not bode well and is one of the reasons why I've been hesitant to enable them (that and the occasional obscene emails I get from someone who claims to be incarcerated). I may have to require comments to be made by only those registered with blogger.
I'll give it a little more time.
I will say, getting comments from people who felt they couldn't email me is a plus. You're always welcome to email, I just can't guarantee a response. If I didn't want people to email, I wouldn't have it available on the site.

Doesn't word verification always weed out the spammage?
Let me try that again without the inadvertently/remarkably stupid part I wrote ...
I love your blog! There's always something interesting and amusing going on here. (I wouldn't dream of disturbing you with an e-mail "just" to say that, though.) :)
I was going to say the same thing as Amy; when I turned on the word verification thingie on my blog, spam vanished! (Ah, I scrolled down to "publish" and see that you're trying it!)
I tried allowing comments on my blog, but ended up getting hundreds of spam comments for every single valid one. It just wasn't worth the time and energy to delete them all the time. And even after we added word verification it was awful--some spamming programs must have ways of getting through.
Sharon:
I assure you that I am not incarcerated.
:-)
I turned on word verification and haven't had a problem...and just one jerk who kept calling me a "looser". Mean, and a bad speller to boot.
(But of course, I only have about 10 regular readers)
Do what ya gotta do, girl. We love being able to comment, but it's your blog.
Cheers!
Susan,
someone called you a "looser"? I haven't been called that since college--har har. Wow, seriously, it sounds like they need an editor about as badly as I do.
I'm liking the comments thing, it adds a whole new level to the blog and gives me a sense of community. I really appreciate all the support. I wonder if Amy will start adding edits to the comments section--don't even pretend like you don't want to, Amy, I can feel your desire to correct grammar and spelling all the way here in Minnesota.
I'm rocking the word verification but the one spam made it through. I guess if it gets bad, I will just require comments to be from blogger subscribers only.
I like the comments, and would be happy to register if that's what would be needed to keep them.
Ha. I know when to bite my tongue, believe it or not ;^p
I'm an LJ-dweller but signed up with Blogger quite a while ago just to comment with friends who hang over here (and know many who do the opposite).
I had to set my LJ to screen comments by those not on my f-list since I have a weirdo neighbor who likes to troll me. Silly people. We don't have word verify though... do you have screen?
I agree about spammers/trolls with bad spelling and grammar. That was one of my major complaints about a hatemail - boring content and bad punctuation / spelling / grammar. I was too busy proofreading to be insulted.
I'm glad you've got comments going. It does make it more fun to chat with other people.
Cool -- I always want to comment on your blog.
The cool thing about comments is that your readers get to know each other too -- It's a great way to build a strong community around yourself.
I never get any spammy comments.
I am jealous -- I don't get any hate mail -- and I don't even have any jerks calling me "looser (sp);" am I doing something wrong?
Hello Sharon
I'm a birder from from Iowa, I enjoy your blog my wife and 13 yr son also read it. My son likes your rabbit photo's and commentary as much as the bird blog's. Your ID this bird photo looks to me like a Shrike Northern or Loggerhead I can't tell. That's my best guess anyway.
