Deformed Bird Bills
As opposed to Non-Birding Bills. Hello, everyone, NBB here again. Sharon's off to Gamefair, so here's a link to tide you over: Deformed Bird Bills is a collection of photo links from the University of Michigan of wild birds with irregular beaks. Dig in.
And now a completele random link (and one of my favorites). One of my favorite web thingies; it's time for a rousing game of Guess the Dictator or Sitcom Character.

Funny game. The computer got one right and one wrong.
Alcids seem to do relatively well with deformities and injuries like that. There's a Common Murre (Uria aalge) at the seabird aviary and rehab I do volunteer work at who has a badly crossed bill, and while we do directly give her a fish or two during feedings just to be sure, she usually seems not to have too much trouble with things. I'm guessing it's because gripping a fish takes less detailed billwork than finangling a tiny seed out of the hull or picking bugs out of crevasses.
By the way, have you ever had the opportunity to see an alcid swimming? They use their wings like fins instead of their feet and can zoom around like crazy. It's awesome. (Just asking because even a lot of serious birders seem to not know about these guys).
Thanks, Bill! That game distracted me for about 20 minutes as I tried to stump it.
