No Wrens Here

I found one bird house that the house wrens did not take over at Mr. Neil's (the house wrens took over his wood duck boxes this summer).

I believe this is some type of funnel spider that has had quite a productive hunting spot in the form of this web built in around this wren house.

Bits of grasshopper, june bugs and daddy longlegs were all over the web. I really can't take spiders very well, but of course curiosity got the best of me, so a blade of grass twitching on the web, got the spider's attention:

Ack! She takes up the whole one inch hole! Enough spiders for me, I'm outta here. The wrens can clean this house out on their own next spring.

Considering the location, I'd be counting the number of legs on that little beastie.

I left you a bookcover link a couple of posts back. If anyone has trouble visualizing Rabbit Disapproval, maybe that'll help.

That beast is so big maybe you ought to check for dead wren bones in the bottom of the nest box! Just imagine the size of her bundle of eggs!!!! Yuck, my toes are all curled up in my shoes!!! Yet, she' still so fascinating.

Yikes - that is one bird house that I would be avoiding at all costs!!! (where are the birds when you need them? - it could be a tasty treat)

I think I know why spiders show up in his books--they're everywhere. I found a HUGE spider exoskeleton in the writing gazebo. It was gross and cool at the same time...then it occurred to me that this means the spider is larger now...and probably lurking in there.

Yucky yucky yucky! I don't like spiders at all! It's as close to being phobic about them, without actually being phobic, if that makes any sense.

Eek! I think you need to talk Mr. Neil into being the one to clean that out!
BTW, it's most likely a Wolf Spider.

Now, I looked up wolf spider as that was my first thought too, but the information implied that wolf spiders don't build webs to catch prey but hunt it down and ambush it.

But then again, I'm not a spiderchick.

The spider situation was even worse today. I should do a good cleansing post before I put more in.

You can dry out various bird parts on your desk and take pictures of the bloody results of sword fights in the hallway, but a lil' ole spider is creeping you out? Aww, Birdchick - you are losing points with this confession.

Spiders are Good Things, and we should be glad we have them, or else we'd be up to our necks in lots and lots of other bugses. Besides, what would hummingbirds and gnatcatchers use to hold their nests together if they didn't have spider webs?

Here's a thought for a movie: "Spiders on a Plane."

I'm am down with the reason we have spiders and I love the job they do. It's the way they move that really creeps me out--all sudden and herky jerky.

Since spider movement is natural to a spider, I wonder if humans gross them out? Do they see us coming with their multiple eyes and think:

"Ew, look at that partially hairy thing moving my way! It moves in a straight line and for some reason whenever I'm around it leaps backward upredictable. This just ooks me out..." (imagine the spider jerking all it's legs in various directions, like person trying to shake off a bug).

Please excuse me while I ......
......have a violent full-body fit. Bleeeaaaakkkkkk!
Ah, that's better.
I hear ya, about the way spiders move. People got on me when I bitched about the mice in our basement...they couldn't understand my distaste, since I own 4 rats.
If mice (and spiders) announced their arrival instead of running under your feet, or God forbid, dropping from the ceiling, I could deal.

We've had more than the usual number here this year... none particularly large, just your basic creepy spider.

They only really bother me when I'm lying in bed and see one on the ceiling. I have to knock it off the ceiling. I can't go to sleep thinking it could wander overhead and fall on me... **shudder**
