Speaking of Cleansing

For those who might want a follow up to my grisly post this morning, here it is:

Boy howdy if the guys from At Home Apartments got the place fairly cleaned up. You can tell it was a hasty paint job, but at least now instead of the stairwell smelling like blood, it smells like paint and Pinesol.

All the local stations are reporting on it, although the details are a little different in each story.
KARE 11
WCCO
KSTP
Star Tribune

The weird thing is that when we got home from work, two news stations were still parked out in front of the building, KSTP and FOX 9. I'm not sure why they needed to be in front of our building since it was all cleaned up, but there they were taking up parking spaces.

Here's what seems to have happened as I understand it. At least two (maybe three) guys got in our building and then forced their way into an apartment on third floor. The intruders had a gun and the guy living in the apartment grabbed his roommate's sword and tried to fight of the attackers. The attackers fled the scene and eventually went to the emergency room where they were apprehended.

My mom, of course wants us to move out tonight. I tried to calm her fears by saying, "Hey no one was murdered, the worst that happened is that someone lost some digits." That didn't work. I also tried to point out what others have said in the comments that a sword fight in an apartment building really is a fluke and a once in a lifetime event. She's not buying it.

Si, it's a fluke. Having grown up with parents who worked in law enforcement and criminal justice, I cannot recall a single sword story told at the dinner table.

Move?! Personally, I'd love to party with a guy willing to take a few hacks at people with guns breaking into his apartment (if that is what in fact happened).

Glad things are looking up. People are going to murder people no matter what neighborhood you live in. The chances of it happening again are pretty slim...assuming these guys are apprehended.

Anyone remember the line in "The World According to Garp"...after a plane flies into the house they are looking at, Garp says "It's been pre-disastered".
So your apartment building has been pre-disastered. But I'm still scared for you, NBB and the buns.

I really do appreciate everyone's concern, but we are all doing well and are safe.

Truth be told, we have been kicking around the idea of moving, our place is just too small for all of our books and this might just be enough to get us off our tookases to do it.

I'm getting too old for this neighborhood anyway--I'm sticking my head out the window in the middle of the night shaking my fist at those darn hooligans making too much noise. It's time for me to head to the outskirts of Fogeytown.

I just checked Non Birding Bill's blog about the incident:

http://www.councilofdoomtheatre.com/williamstiteler/2006/08/real-horror-show.html

One of his commenters made a Highlander reference. GEEKS.

Without reading NBB's post, let me guess....

We love the Tealwood Apartments in Bloomington. Stay away from East Village Apartments in Minneapolis. We lived there for 3 years and hated every minute of it.

a) I reiterate my previous comments about WTH is going on in Uptown this summer? North? Sure. Phillips? Yeah. But Yuptown? That's the site of petty crime, not random shootings and samurai swordings.

b) Moms hate Uptown no matter what. "Where are you going Steve?" "Uptown." "OMG, that's where people get murdered!" "Mom!!"

c) I'm getting too old for this neighborhood anyway--I'm sticking my head out the window in the middle of the night shaking my fist at those darn hooligans making too much noise.

There's where the reality sets in. Uptown is for the youngsters unless you want to turn into one of those creepy old hippy types.

Ohmygod, that looks like the apartment my Grandparents lived in years ago in Uptown Mpls.! My Aunt still lives not far from there on Irving Ave. S. - now, that is a dandy neighborhood!
The apartments used to be so friendly - you could smell what old ladies were cooking and Grandpa planted flowers all around the yards. But, hey, Lake St. is Lake St.Erin

d'oh! If just making a Highlander reference earns a "GEEKS" I'm in trouble. On the wall, about 3 feet from where I'm sitting right now, we've got both the Kurgan sword and the MacLeod sword.
The closest we've got to a Samurai sword though is the Green Destiny from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
We've never had to use any of them to defend ourselves though...yet. I figure they will come in handy in case of a zombie infestation. :)

I'm glad you, NBB, and Cinnamon had nothing but some lost sleep, although I'm sure Cinnamon greatly disapproves of sword fighting!

Things like this incident are why I'm thrilled to not be living in an apartment anymore. I don't hear my neighbors, my nights are sword-fight free, I've got a (small) backyard, and I'm still only 10 minutes from either Uptown or Downtown.

Good luck finding an apartment that allows rabbits. We have two and when we moved, almost every place we talked to said they allowed cats and dogs but had a no rabbit policy. Tealwood was the only place that we found that let us bring the buns. Our rabbits heartily disapproved of the policies. I'm sure Cinnamon would too.
