Dishwashing Bunny

Cinnamon finishes up cleaning all the acorn squash on my fork and prepares to steal it. Hard to take her seriously as a master thief with buck teeth.

Since Cinnamon disapproves WAY more than she smiles, she's not too concerned with how white her teeth are.

We are boarding a bunny at my practice for the next two weeks. She is really cute, but I'm not sure what breed she is. Can you do rabbit ID from a verbal description?

She has short, up-right ears and a little short nose, and weighs about 5 or 6 pounds. Her color is interesting - a jumble of tan and blue-gray that I might call merle in a dog, or dilute tortoiseshell in a cat.

Also, as far as I can tell, she approves of staying in our staff break room. (Well, I can't very well board a prey animal in with cats or dogs, now, can I?) In fact, I sensed no disapproval at all as we cleaned her cage today. (Why would an owner drop off a pet at the vet's office in a filthy cage?) Is disapproval a universal rabbit characteristic, or is it breed-specifc?

I'm not very good on my rabbit id. Short upright ears and a short nose sounds like it's some type of dwarf breed, but they can be all mixed. Latte (the white disapproving rabbit with black eyeliner) was a dwarf hotot mix. His ears weren't as short as a true dwarf rabbit.

Why don't you check out the Netherland Dwarf Rabbit site show winners and see if any of those match the bunny you're boarding.

I have yet to encounter a rabbit that does not disapprove--except for the cartoon version at Annie's Pasta. I have found that when people don't see disapproval, they are living in denial.

I agree that the short ears sound like a dwarf breed. However, dwarf rabbits are usually smaller (3-4 pounds) so I'm not sure.

Thanks, Birdchick and MegJ: Well, Roxie (the rabbit) is definitely not a Netherland dwarf. While her ears and nose are short (at least compared to a wild rabbit), they are significantly larger than those shown on the ANDRC site.

I found some other rabbit breed photos online, and Roxie doesn't really match any of them. I guess she is a mixed breed dwarf. Whatever her parentage, she is a funny little thing. I think we will enjoy having her around for the next 2 weeks.
