Peregrine Controversy in Idaho

For some reason I can't post directly to the link, but head over to WildBird on the Fly's blog and look for the Monday, Sept 25, 2006 entry. A very odd petition has started about the peregrine falcon being removed from the state quarter design for Idaho.

I went to look at the actual petition and I think there is now official proof that people who live in Idaho are a little touched. Several added comments with their signatures and I really have to wonder about people who think a potato is more exciting than a bird that can go over 200 miles per hour in a dive.

And potatoes aren't ubiquitous?

Why not a potato and a peregrine?

With some of the bland designs that have been used for other states, I think that a peregrine would make Idaho's quarter quite distinctive, regardless of the peregrine's ubiquity.

As I reviewed some of the responses, I noticed this one - "What does the falcon have to do with anything in Idaho. I went through school here and didn't learn of the Pinegere Falcon. Come on!!!" Yes folks, we have a winner!

Thanks, NBB, for getting the link up. One of the many reasons I love you so!

Okay, now I'm pissed.
I read through alot of the comments, and some people have good points. A FEW even know how to spell.
But this one is my favorite so far:

WHAT A CHEAP COP OUT. I'M GLAD OUR GREAT STATE IS GOING TO BE KNOWN FOR A RAT WITH WINGS AND THE ONLY CITY IN IDAHO, BOISE

A "Rat with wings"? Isn't that a bat? I'm not from Idaho, so maybe my info is bad.
I can't help but think of our Lucy, the peregrine at our facility. She would LOVE to be on a quarter.
I am assuming that these people are not birders...just a hunch.
A rat with wings...still chuckling about that one....

Here's a link to the final quarter design. That is a cool looking quarter, much cooler than the MN Quarter:

Just think what that quarter design could have looked like with Mr. Potato Head on it! Maybe the design committee was afraid people from other states would shun a potato-clad quarter, or toss it like a hot potato. Or maybe potatoes really did win, but the vote was split between "Peregrine Falcon," "Potato," and "Potatoe."

I grew up in Boise but moved away 10 years ago. I can assure you that all Idahoans are not ignorant potato heads and some are quite intelligent. I can name three. Anyway, congratulations to the thinking outside of the potato crate people that came up with the Peregrine falcon. It is a magnificent bird and represents the state of Idaho far better than a spud. Actually potholes would be more apropos but let’s not go there.
