Stupid Digital Camera

The blog might be a little sucky over the next few weeks.

So, the latch that holds the battery on my Nikon Coolpix 7900 has been giving me problems for the last month. It's been slightly ajar. Something I should have gotten fixed sooner, but who has time to send the camera away for two to six weeks with the blog? Well now it's completely crapped out and there's a problem with the lens. Of course this happens right when hawk banding is underway.

I have no idea what I'm going to do, I don't want to buy a new camera while it's being fixed but at the same time the blog is so much more fun with it. At the moment all I can do is sit in a big pile of frustration.

My Kodak Easyshare is doing the same thing with its battery compartment. I guess I have dropped it in a fit of excitement in the woods too many times.
We can hang in there, maybe....
Can you rent digital cameras?

CVS (drugstore chain - dunno if near you) has disposable digital cameras for $19.99.

What about your cellphone? Does that have a camera in it? 640 x 480 is fine for the blog.

I just added a graphic to demonstrate why drawing instead of photos might not be a good idea. I've seen house sparrows with better visual art skills than mine.

Although, maybe this could be a fun future id quiz. You have to guess the bird I was trying to draw--that could get pretty frightening.

Speaking of which, can anyone tell from my crude drawing in this post how many birds I drew and what species?

ivory-billed woodpecker

That's definitely an Ivory-bill. Probably a female. That drawing must have been made in Bayou de View.

It's an Imperial Woodpecker. Notice how the crest curls forward. And notice how this Sharon figure is concerned about her hair. She is attempting a parallel theme as the Imperial was known for being overly concerned about the degree of curl in the crest, and would spend hours applying pine tree resin to it in the attempt to get the curl just right.

LOL...you gotta love bunny disapproval in pen art. Those three birds look to be an Ivory Biled Woodpecker, a Cardinal, and an Osprey.

Right or wrong I'm sure Cinnamon disapproves of my guesses.

LOL... if all else fails you can always do cartooning for Birdwatcher's Digest (...or maybe 'Highlights' magazine); and the 3 birds are very obviously either 1) a grackle, a blue jay, or a goshawk, 2) a cardinal, a pyrrhuloxia, or a titmouse on steroids, and 3) an albino ivory-billed woodpecker.

OK - 3 birds - a pileated woodpecker, a pet cockatiel on the loose and a crow. Hey who needs a camera?

Cardinal and Cooper's Hawk are right, but this is a Pileated Woodpecker, not an Ivory-billed. If you look closely at the underwing coverts and compare them to the tertials of a silk crank, you can quite clearly see that the rototiller is skewed to the contralateral side, appearing more rufous than amber in the crepuscular light. Confirmation of the ID can be noted if you flip your computer monitor very quickly, thus creating the appearance of flight. Note the trailing edge of the wings; clearly Pileated. Also, I don't hear a "double rap."

Cinnamon's disapproval is so great that it shines through even Birdchick's artwork. Sharon's hair, on the other hand, needs some help.

Forget the camera, just draw birds - no one can argue with you about your ID, and you can change your handle from BirdCHICK to BirdGODDESS.

Speaking of ID, I e-mailed you some raptor photos for your insight and wisdom.

I'm sorry to say I modeled my legs after smurfette. We're the same height and I always liked her shoes.
