Holiday Hawk?

Thanks, Yvonne, for passing this my way:

Okay, it's not accurate at all but it's still making me chuckle.

Too funny!

Oh, BTW, just got home from Barnes and Noble where there was a big holiday table out front displaying various pet books just BEGGING for a "Disapproving Rabbits" book.

The bird looks like an augur buzzard native to East Africa

The raptor in the commercial is not an osprey--the shape and coloration are wrong. I agree that its a buteo, most like an auger buzzard.

Plus, osprey are not the easiest birds to work with when it comes to bird handling. They are too high strung and just don't have the temperment for it.

I think maybe not an Osprey - wing span not big enough for size of the bird's body in the ad.
Maybe an auger buzzard, but the brest area is all white and no speckles.......hummmmmmm....ongoing investigation.

It looks alot like a peregrine falcon from the facial markings and wing colors however the pure white chest and legs are not common. I agree that it's not an Osprey. I've never seen a Buteo but there seem to be alot of variations... could be a Buteo.

This is not a peregrine, the wings are long and broad like a buteo and not thin and pointy like they would be on a falcon. Buteo is a genus of raptors that includes red-tailed hawks in North America and common buzzards in Europe.

This is for sure a hawk, most likely the African version of a red-tailed hawk--an auger buzzard.

Definitely doesn't sound like an osprey.

Hi Birdchick. I'm a chick who loves birds in Dallas and, while on the search to identify the Holiday Hawk, I ran across your site. I'm linking your site to mine: D Magazine in Dallas. Keep up the good work.

Hi! Bird Nerd here!

As far as I know, it's illegal to use any species that is either indigenous or migrates through the United States in commercials.

It does look like an Osprey, but I am pretty certain it's an Auger Buzzard. There was one used in a beer commercial just a few years ago.

yes, it is an auger buzzard -- its the most commonly used hawk in the film industry -- because we are not allowed to use native birds like red tails or even ravens, we are forced to import them from abroad and pass them off as local. often we even have to color the white patch on imported ravens.

Personally, I still like to think of it as a holiday hawk.
