Call Auntie Mame, I Need A Little Christmas!

Last year we didn't have a Christmas Tree because I was gone for two weeks right before Christmas (although Non Birding Bill did improvise with a cool home made paper tree). This year we decided against it because our library of bird/theatre/science fiction/rabbit books is taking over our apartment and we just don't have the space (we are so going to have to find a new place to live in the next year and a half).

However, the lack of snow combined with play rehearsals and deadlines has just left us without the Holiday Spirit. NBB attempted to give himself a booster shot by purchasing some light sabers and Nerf guns for Toys for Tots (he admitted they were violent toys, but argued they were the best toys). That helped.

Sunday as we were out and about doing errands and re-establishing our pair bond, we brought up the tree issue in that classic passive marital couple conversation style.

BC: I bet Cinnamon misses a tree to hide under.

NBB: We don't have room.

BC: Plus, we'd have to drag out all the decorations, unwrap them, put them up and then take down the tree. We don't have time.

NBB: Yeah, we probably shouldn't get a tree. Boy, Cinnamon's room is kind of stinky.

BC: I bet a tree would help cover that up. I love the smell of a good balsam tree.

NBB: I wonder if we could get a small one--Sharon-sized.

BC: Well, you know how much Cinnamon likes to loaf under a tree.

NBB: Might put us in the Christmas mood.

BC: And according to the Rolling Stones keyboard guy, it's good for the environment. He's a Christmas Tree Farmer

NBB: You're telling me a member of the Rolling Stones is a tree farmer?

BC: Seriously, he was on the radio the other day. I do go birding at a tree farm, that's where I see those clay-colored sparrows and dickcissels--I owe it to those birds.

NBB: We could just drive by and see if the Forestry Club is having their sale again...

Doodly-doodly-doodly-doodly:

We have a tree. Look at that, a forced disapproval as NBB holds Cinnamon up to the tree so she can share in the excitement. We turned on my iPod for my Christmas mixes--boy I have some weird stuff on there such as the Knight Rider Christmas song.

We also have a LOT of bird ornaments too. Some are kind of accurate, some aren't and some are just different. Above is an assortment, the bluebird is part of a series that NBB's mom has been giving me the last few years. This year's bird is a chickadee on mistletoe, which has been strategically placed to guarantee some kissing. The chickadee ornament in the middle in the above photo is part of a Hallmark series that I was given when I was a kid and just getting into birds. The cardinals co-nesting were something I picked up from the bird store. You can tell in the photo, but they are touched with lavender glitter.

Here's a bluebird sticking his head out of a roosting box.

I call this my Liberace cardinal--complete with bells on his toes.

Here's a snowy owl, heavy on the eyeliner.

Speaking of eyeliner, here's a personal favorite. Santa Claus riding on a bald eagle to deliver holiday gifts. What would Rudolph say? This ornament is a little too heavy for the tree so sits on the window ledge.

Here's a reminder of last Christmas. I don't know why, but the idea of an ivory-bill flying on a glittery globe similar to a disco ball just tickles me.

Here's a nuthatch creeping down the tree trunk.

Out of season, but here is a rose-breasted grosbeak searching for safflower in the tree.

Some relatives have even managed to find disapproving rabbits for our tree.

I like this, the rabbit is disapproving and there's even a European robin sitting on the ornament too. I think this is Cinnamon's favorite ornament.

Anyone else out there have some fun bird ornaments?

Does Cinnamon ever try to eat the tree? That is why we don't have one this Xmas.

We do have bird ornaments, but we only decorated the top half of the tree this year (puppies...need I say more?)

We did change the holiday dishes this year. The stoneware was getting a little crackly, so now we have Lenox Winter Greetings which means we have white breasted nuthatches, cardinals, chickadees, house finches, goldfinches, cedar waxwings, etc. on our dinnerware. It's nice... but the china is the only place I see a cedar waxwing here. :P I don't know why they didn't do a junco plate.

Sharon, I used some of my birthday money at the bird store on Saturday. I got the MN field guide book of birds AND accompanying CD. My husband was almost as excited as I was. You should have seen the cats congregating around the speakers when we played the CD. Heh!

I have a carved wooden ornament of a fairly realistic looking male American Kestrel in-flight. I thought it was pretty cool, so several months ago I decided to hang it from the ceiling in our cabin's loft. The second-story loft is surrounded by windows on 3 sides and our cabin is surrounded by Southern California foothill wilderness on ALL sides. The upshot? My husband (who works on his computer up there) claims that our resident male kestrel repeatedly "attacked" the screened windows -- flapping his wings & calling loudly. It was quite impressive & intimidating, to hear him tell it. The ornament does have a definite falcon silhouette, but as to why the kestrel would be peeking in our windows in the first place, I'm just not sure...Anyway, I took the ornament down, just in case it really was upsetting the "neighbors".

Ooo! We've got birdies on our tree. A few antique German hand-blown glass birds with pinchers on their feet to perch on a branch. A lovely carolina wren ornament, a few blown glass swans with spun glass tails. I love my Christmas ornaments. MWWWWAHHH to Cinnamon. I approve of his disapproval

Three years ago, I got rid of all of my non-bird ornaments. Today, I am proud of the "hot, all-bird action" going on in my tree!

I have been trying to find the most realistic ornaments I can, but it is turning out to be a labor of love. For now, I still hsve sequined crowned kinglets and glitter-backed finches.

Those rabbit ornaments are great. People always do cutesy bunnies. I've never seen disapproving rabbits on ornaments. We just got these rabbit neck wraps. You heat them in the microwave and wrap them around your neck. They are shaped like bunnies and smell like lavendar. My rabbits don't approve. They think it is a little sick to wear a rabbit around your neck.

Every year my parents buy an ornament for each of us kids and our spouses for our Christmas stocking. A couple years ago my dad was thrilled because he found six glass bird ornaments that clip onto the branches. They were just like the ones his family had when he was a kid. We each got one.
Here's the address for pictures of them:

We just bought a bunch of cute carved wooden bird ornaments at Cost Plus/World Market. Worth looking for if there's one near you, as they're all on sale. On the realistic side, if not all identifiable species.

Target Stores have some pretty realistic looking bird ornaments for those on the lookout.

Cinnamon does try to eat the tree, but she sticks to the edges of the branches. The first year she was with us, she climbed all over the presents and started to climb onto the branches (she is such a climber). Now she is content to nibble and loaf under the tree.

finding my new normal - enjoy that book and CD. It's a great way to get to know the birds in the hood.

canyon lady - that's freaky about that kestrel. Is your ornament life size?

kviz - I approve of a hot all bird action tree!

megj - believe it or not, those bunny ornaments are from Hallmark of all places. Someone there in corporate must have a bunny.

target - stuffed eagle that "sings" we wish you a merry christmas - there's a story behind it (years ago i got a stuffed dog that barks jingle bells from my boss, one of my pups took it as his so every year he gets a new one, last year it was a cow that moos and this year a duck that quacks joy to the world)

i won't let him have the eagle tho - it's too cool.

YOU have bird ornaments? Why???

:)

And Cinnamon looks like a vampire in that picture. And I am sure that she would disapprove of me calling her a vampire.
That reminds me of a book I read when I was younger...ever heard of BUNNICULA? Instead of blood, he drained juice out of veggies.

I don't have many bird ornaments yet. People are slow in realizing that "this bird thing" is permanent. I guess it's up to me to fill the tree with them. (3 feet off the ground, at least. Kids and puppy and pyscho cats)
