Not a peregrine in the picture then?

Certainly looks like a Red-tail to me.
-The Nemesis Birder
That is no peregrine falcon. That is a buteo, most likely a first year red-tailed hawk. I'm certain the author had no say whatsoever.
From what I understand it is a very good book from its time.
I have this book and, if you are a fellow English person, you will enjoy the poetic writing of John Baker. However, in my humble opinion and having read dozens of raptor books, there are many other peregrine stories worth reading. The first that comes to mind is Jim Enderson's 'Tales of the Blue Meanie.' Also, the late Bill Burnham's 'A Fascination with Falcons'.....'The Falcons of Chimney Rock'..by Marcy Houle, a riveting story even if you know nothing about raptors. I think most of these are available at Amazon.com in the used and new section for nominal amounts.
