Random Polar Bear Entry
I found a couple of photos on the camera I hadn't downloaded yet from the past weekend. We took the in-laws to Como Zoo in St. Paul and I got a couple of great shots of the polar bear swimming:
He kept doing the backstroke towards the glass, plunging under, flipping around and shooting off the glass wall. Was the polar bear merely having fun or hoping to finally wear down the strength of the glass and burst through eating me like the prey that I am?
Here I got the bear mid plunge! Speaking of polar bears, have you guys ever seen this the video of a Japanese girl wearing seal hat at a zoo and getting "chased" by a polar bear? Here it is:

She's not a bright girl, is she?
I used to LOVE Como Park Zoo! Do they still have the Galapogos Tortises?
Japanese television has some strange shows.
What worries me is: how does the bear know a seal is food? Possibly it still remembers hunting them somewhere in the Arctic before he was caught for some ... nice Zoo in Japan?
I want to say that the Japanese have a much sicker sense of what's entertaining than we do, but think of some of the crap we watch on TV.
The Japanese are...strange...in their idea of funny it seems.
I love your pictures of the polar bear! Isn't it wonderful how peaceful he looks? He's probably thinking, "Just on the other side of that glass is a tasty snack. How would I prepare it? Baked? Fried? Raw...? .... "
Oh, by the way, how are the disapproving rabbits coming along?
We were at Como Park last year when visiting daughter, polar bear was doing the same bit, it does make you feel a bit like lunch, doesn't it.
Did you go through the conservatory too? Love the earthy smell of plants and moist soil in the middle of the winter.

Or . . . walk away.
Bizarre. Had to forward it on to my husband though. Loved the intent look on the polar bear's face. He KNEW he was gonna have him some seal for dinner!
I must be turning Japanese, because I thought that video was hilarious. That ol' bear sure snapped out of it when Keiko showed up with dinner on her head. Thanks for the laugh, BC. That was probably the most interesting thing that had happened to that poor polar bear in years. Everywhere you see them confined, you see the stereotyped, repetitive and compulsive behavior that tells of their boredom. Here's an animal that survives by its wits, travels hundreds of miles yearly, hemmed in by fiberglas "icebergs," enduring 100-degree summer temperatures for our amusement. Blaaa on that. The next time I go to a zoo I'm going to wear a baby seal on my head.
