Suet Marketing

One of my favorite flavors of suet to offer birds is Woodpecker Treat put out by C and S. It's getting harder to find, the bird stores don't always have it so sometimes I have to go to some place like Home Depot (every now and then those big box stores get it right). It's a nice mixture of mixed nut chuncks and suet and isn't overloaded with millet and corn like other flavors.

On the last suet cake I bought, I was struck by the advertising on the package (note above). Best Wild Bird Acceptance? That was the best marketing could come up with? Acceptance? I'm going to start telling that to Non Birding Bill. "Honey, you are so acceptable. You are best wife acceptance." Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure I've seen that translation in a Stephen Chow movie subtitle.

Comparitavely, the birding industry is very young, but sometimes marketing like that just makes me shake my head. What were you guys thinking?

Other possibilities:

Feeder tested, woodpecker approved!
Hot pick for peckers!
Birds find this super tastey!

Or how about a cheesy retooling of Fergilicious:

Woodpecker Treat is Birdilicious:

It's birdalicious (so delicious)
My feeders stay vicious
I be up in the vats just working on my mixtures
He's my witness (fee bee)
I put yo' birds on rock rock
And they be lining down the block just to chirp at what I got (four, tres, two, uno)

Birdilicious

C&S is great stuff. One of our home improvement stores is my best bet for good, dirt cheap suet. I might add for the marketing:

Suet, not just for breakfast anymore;
Best ingredients for the best birds;

And maybe a disclaimer - not for human (or dog) consumtion. And what's with the Party Mix flavor?

OR this song my daughter plays over and over on her stereo.

" I bet you wish your SUET (girlfriend) was hot like me "

I hate FM Radio! (-:

Back when I was a teenager in Duluth, the only radio station that played music was a local am station called WEBC. Man those of were days of listening to "Disco Duck" on radio or "Funky Town"

I am old.

Oh, now that's funny! I also find that the labeling on most bird things (unless you are in Wild Birds Unlimited) assumes that the person purchasing it knows little or nothing about birds. I hate, hate, hate that commercial hummingbird nectar mix which gives the impression that you'll only get hummers if you use the red powdered goop. Arrruuugghh.

I took a professional test recently to prove that I was capable of teaching student's to read. The test committee, in their wisdom, decided that the best way to give the results was "below acceptable," acceptable, and "more than acceptable." I'm pleased to report that I earned a "more than acceptable" score. My heart swelled with pride.

The berries in the Party mix are soaked in bourbon.

I'll have to give that flavor a shot...I've always tended towards the cakes with fewer ingrediants...insect being my favorite. Interestingly, I recently put a calcium and insect cake out at same time and calcium got MUCH more traffic. I thought this was really for breeding season? Maybe it was the flavor.

Thanks for your very most readable and informational postings!

Is there any SURE way to attract woodpeckers? I've tried several kinds of suett and so far all we get ate scrubjays and squirrels. The squirrels knock it down.

Soooo... for now we've taken the suett feeder down ..... :(
