Curiouser and Curiouser...
BirderBlog reports that the comments for the Walda Cameron essay on why she illegally shot a cardinal have disappeared. Is this because there were so many it over loaded the comments page? If you look at the other My Turn essays the comments are very low from 2 comments to 5 comments to 15 to one particular essay that was up several days earlier and had worked its way up to 70 comments. Last I checked the cardinal killing essay was well past 120 comments in only two days.
Maybe it was because there were so many comments taking Newsweek to task for printing the essay? Could it have been all the comments proclaiming subscription cancellations? Maybe there is actually an investigation going on by US Fish and Wildlife? Maybe some of the fighting has gotten dirty and personal? Goodness knows I've had to delete a few comments in the last two days.
Hmmmmmmmmmm.

If Newsweek is getting that much feedback, I imagine there will be some kind of statement or retraction from the editors. The response from bird bloggers has been fairly civil, but that probably isn't the case with everyone who commented there.
Note that the column has been rated "1.5" by site users.
Most likely Newsweek's lawyers told them to take the comments off and to minimize any discussion that may lead to legal trouble. Typical corporate move.
Boy, I was mad about the article, but how dare they remove and turn off the comments? If they're going to publish inflammatory articles like that, they need to learn how to take their lumps. I'm disgusted beyond belief.
I wonder if it would be worth calling the authorities again on Monday to ask if she's being prosecuted?

I'm sure Newsweek will be hearing about this one for some time.
Better check your facts on this, Birdchick. The article is still available. I downloaded it just a few minutes ago.
Oops! My mistake. Yes, the artical is still there, but the comments are not.
I think the comments were removed because someone keeps posting the woman's home phone number and address. The woman will be subject to legal prosecution and fines for violating the law. A google search on her name will bring this up for years. But she and her family should not be subjected to personal harassment. I bet her attorneys told Newsweek to get rid of the comments or be sued--though it IS ironic, since she wrote the column and if she had a brain in her head, would have figured out people reading it would be mad. She upset gun owners and hunters because even the NRA strongly advocates that people using a firearm in the commission of a crime should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and she was NOT hunting--she was poaching. How one little essay could so swiftly tick off people on both ends of the political spectrum and a great many in between is an interesting study.
