Dunkin Donuts Broke My Heart

But has probably saved me loads of calories. Sigh.

One of the joys of travel is being able to eat at chains I don't have access to in Minnesota like Chick-fil-A and Dunkin Donuts. I grew up on Dunkin Donuts, I remember my mom's friend Diana coming over on Friday nights with a big box of donuts and pigging out. My favorite being the chocolate or vanilla creme filled donut--a donut covered in powdered sugar and filled with thick, tooth-numbing creme. That was the embodiment of donut to me.

Last summer when I went to Maine for the ABA Convention, I ate at a Dunkin every morning. WildBird on the Fly and I loaded up a bag and feasted on our way to Acadia National Park--it was a gluttonous heaven. Alas, those days are gone...

Being on the East Coast this weekend I knew I would have access to lots of donuts. Dunkin Donuts started in Massachusetts--I would be near the mother land by being Connecticut. My first morning I stopped at a Dunkin and asked for the creme filled donut. They didn't have it. I figured this was just an irregularity, so I stopped at another less than a mile away and learned the awful truth--they have been DISCONTINUED. ARRRRRRRGH!

I was short on time and needed to grab some breakfast so I reluctantly ordered a box of donut holes to eat. They were not as good--they weren't what I was craving and looking forward to, they didn't stand a chance of being tasty to me. I ate a fair share of the donut holes and realized it was silly to waste the calories and decided to share the donuts with some gulls. Hence all the photos of ring-billed gulls eating donuts from my hand in this entry.

I haven't been this angry and bitter since Caribou Coffee discontinued the North Woods Latte (it tasted like liquid French toast, it was yummy) --yeah, Caribou, I'm still upset about that. I quit going there for almost a year when that happened and go only sporadically now.

I'm trying to tell myself this is a good thing, a way of the universe telling me that I've been doing so well by current healthy eating habits, why wreck it now? It's hard enough to eat healthy on the road, so losing this donut access will only allow me to have better choices.

No, I want my creme filled donut!

We passed this car in a parking lot and thought it was a fun cloud of herring and ring-billed gulls surrounding a car. As we started taking pictures, the car left. Are they ashamed that they feed gulls?

They stopped selling the cream filled donuts? I haven't had one in years, but they were my absolute favorite when I was growing up as well. Sigh. Guess someone is trying to have us eat well. Sigh. And I agree, those donut holes are not the best -- instead of light and fluffy, they are so dense (they must have slowed those gulls down for the day).

I don't like Boston creme donuts--I'm a purist--I don't want custard in that donut, I want the sugary creme filling.

I think this entry demonstrates why my husband calls me Sharon Q. Whiney Pants.

Hey, those were my favorites, too! I have always ordered one of those when the store has one. Maybe the creme lovers should start writing complaints to Dunkin Donuts.

Herring gulls can tell when you've got cream filled donuts. The folks in the blue car had the last ones!

Those photos remind me of the times the gulls swooped down and snatched food from my nephew's hands when we were having lunch at the SF Zoo. Brazen buggers.

Looks like you will have to try Krispy Kreme. They have the cream filled.

I grew up in CT and on Dunkin' Donuts too. Here in Virginia we have ONE Dunkin' Donuts about 30 minutes from here. I don't really care for the Krispy Kremes... too cake like and sweet. You're so right about not having access to DD being much healthier. The Boston Cream is my fav. and I swear it is like heroin. I always want another.

I see Chick-Fil-A has headed up North. It's been a southern thing for way too long.

Sharon,
As you travel, watch for the Krispy Kreme Donut stores. Their donuts may cause you to forget entirely about Dunkin Donuts ! Yes, they have the kind of cream filling you describe and yes, occasionally it is OK to replace the spinach and tofu with true decadence. Krispy Kreme was originally a chain in the south, I don't know how far afield the stores are currently but we have them in Michigan. Yummm !

LOL, I like the idea of someone throwing out creme filled donuts to the mass of gulls in the last photo. Maybe I'll have to start hanging out with flocks of gulls in parking lots!

I have tried the Krispy Kreme version and I do give them high marks for coating the top of the donut with chocolate--genius on their part. However, the creme in the donut is not as thick and sugary as the former DD version.

We have KK in just about every Target and Super America in the state so that is where I will have to get my fix.

oh my gosh! the powdered choco filled are my favs - whenever i drive to tucson to visit my family my first stop on the way back to california on saturday night is DnD to get the choco filled donut and a box of chocolate donut holes for my sunday school class - i teach high school girls - it's a special treat since i don't get home often! but yeah the donut holes are not as good as that choco sugary filling ... but cheaper when you have to buy a bunch for a class full of teenagers!

you crack me up - maybe we should start a campaign to get the donuts back... if we can get you unlisted from sonicwall there's no telling what we could do!

My mother is going to be very sad. We used to always get those on Sunday mornings growing up. My mom would take a butter knife and push all the cream (or is it really icing?) down into the donut. Yummy.

I know how you feel! Whenever my husband and I travel in the South, we always look for a Waffle House.

Re gulls: When we went to Alabama a few years ago, we went to Lamberts Cafe (The home of "Throwed Rolls.") We took a few of the rolls back to the fishing pier at Gulf State Park and started throwing bits to the gulls.

I think it was Dunkin Donuts I used to get for the kids. Two of them could eat a dozen apiece before school. I don't know how they did it. I'd have to ask them to save their Mom two. :-)

I too am very disapointed in the end of an era. I was addicted to the chocolate kremes and now they're gone. You shoul write a complaint. I already did...

Please note that Dunkin Donuts started in Quincy, Massachusetts not RI. You can check out the history on the DD website. In addition, they continue to have many cream donuts.

If you're looking for the Vanilla Kreme you can find it. DD is a franchise and depending on where you go it's hit or miss.

I have found them on Rte 44 in Randolph ma, and Carver MA on rte 58 will sometimes have them.

Check out the following URL for more locations: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/478262

I worked at dunkin donuts part time in the summers during high school and college. (In rhode island, where dunkin donuts didnt start, but it def has more dunkin donuts locations per capita than any other state).
allow me to weigh in on this please.
dunkin donuts varies what donuts are available by region. In New England, the creme filled donuts are not as popular as in other regions, and they are seldom/if ever available. Go to dunkins in places like NYC, DC, PA, the South, upstate new york, Midwest, and you are sure to find your beloved creme filled donuts. So don't give up hope! you were just in the wrong area of the country.
I'm sure one day, visiting any of these areas, you'll find your beloved donuts again!

I know the feeling. I'm Minnesotan and learned to love Chick-fil-a at college in South Carolina, and I remember when we had Dunkin in MN.

I'm in New Jersey for grad school, and they actually *have* the creme-filled. Maybe it's a regional thing?

fwiw, there *IS* a Chick-fil-A here in the Twin Cities... sort of...

it's in the Coffman Union at the U of M, but you can only get nuggets, sandwiches, & fries.

OMG! I love Dunkin Donuts. I live in the Twin cities and grew up with one not far from my house. Now - it sounds like there may only be one left in the entire state. My fav was the "Today's Special" - vanilla frosting and sprinkles - YUM! I am traveling to Florida next week and it sounds like there are many DnD shops there - so I can't want to have a weeks worth!

I really think Cafe Donuts in Columbia Heights is a Dunkin' Donuts. I went and got a Boston Creme and it tasted exactly like DD. This was at least a year ago but I remember the way the shop was set up was pretty similar to a DD too (especially the price board).

I have travelled extensively in MA looking for the cream filled donuts as they are my mother's and my favorite. They used to be a special treat when I would travel to MA to visit with her. Haven't been able to find them anywhere for quite some time. I wish Dunkin's would bring them back!
