Bird Identification Contest
Remember the evil eye contest?
I thought this was a tough contest but Non Birding Bill got it on the first guess. The prize is a green Leupold tote bag with a meadowlark on it and a bag of veggie suet pellets.
First correct identification with a name/identity attached in the comments section wins the prize.

Methinks it's a red-bellied woodpecker's head.
I'm also going with the Red Bellied Woodpecker.
I'm going for a red-headed woodpecker.
Hello, there!
My name is Rosanna. I know your are a bird lover, and I need some tips about feeding the backyard bird. Actually I am in a city of Texas, and I live in an apartment instead of a house. I wanted to feed the birds, but all that came to eat are house sparrows except one pair of Northern Cardinals. I just learned house sparrows are considered “bad” by people, in this sense, I should not feed them, but I still want to feed the cardinals. What should I do? I am using a bag of “wild bird seeds mix”, but both the cardinals and the sparrows eat them. I wonder in your knowledge, is there anything that cardinals like to eat while detested by the sparrows? Is that possible? Am I wrong if in order to feed the Cardinal I also feed a bunch of sparrows? I am so puzzled now.
I will be very appreciative of your reply! Thank you! My e-mail is rosanna_2003@hotmail.com.
I think hellziggy is the winner!
I find that Cardinals love the safflower seed I put out, but the House Sparrows ignore it.
I also agree with Red-bellied Woodpecker.
Ok, we'll make a wild guess that it is a bird not seen recently and say your first robin has shown up.
Could it be a Pileated?
It's obviously an Ivory-billed Woodpecker. You can tell from the angle of the red jutting out from the wood. Also, I took some measurements of the hole sizes as reconstructed if the bird had hammered some holes into the wood, and it's DEFINITELY an IBWO.
Well, Laura, frankly I think you are pushing things too far here: is there any way you can positively eliminate a vagrant Imperial Woodpecker? Maybe that's the reason they aren't found in Mexico anymore: not enough feeders in comparison to further North?
I am late, but I will also vote for a Red bellied wood pecker.

I don't know the answer but I wanted to let you know that I found an eagle cam today on Yahoo news. I'm not sure if you know abouth it or not but I thought you would like it if you didn't. The article is on the front page of Yahoo news today (3/8/07) and it is called "Live on the Internet: Eagle protects egg". If you don't catch the article here is the link they gave to the eagle cam http://www.briloon.org You have to go to the site first and then click on the Eagle Cam.
Congrats, Hellziggy!
You were the first with the correct answer. Your prize will be mailed Friday morning.
Laura, you get A for effort and optimism.
Hooray for slacking off on the interwebs during class! :)
If you want to save on postage we could figure out some time in the near future to meet for dinner. Maybe even talk that favorite librarian of ours into joining us!
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have gotten it if not for your gorgeous pic of the red-bellied last week...

Any prize for an ID of the feeder? I think it is a Birds Choice Tail Prop Suet Feeder.
