Et Tu, Attenborough?

So, we loved Life of Birds so much that we rented Life of Mammals from Netflix. Life of Birds was so accurate. As we are watching a segment on pikas, David Attenborough just mentioned that eagles are a predator. As soon as he said the word "eagle" a red-tailed hawk cry was dubbed over.

Big sigh of disappointment.

I hate when they do that! Let's just hear a REAL eagle cry. It isn't as majestic as a RTH but at least it's authentic.

Attenborough makes things seem interesting enough with the way he talks-no need to cheat.

Aw, gee. I mean, I know eagles never would have made the transition from silent film to talkies, but heck. If people can't handle their real voice, at least just show them silently in flight.

I like to trip people up in my programs by playing a RT call and asking the audience to identify it. They ALWAYS say "bald eagle".
I can't pay attention to a movie when I hear a bird call that has no place in the setting of a movie, like an eastern bird call in L.A. Arrggh!

It reminds me how annoyed I get when TV and movie sound people dub the call of a loon in over any "outdoorsy" type scene. I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if loons are native to the rest of the US, but I somehow doubt they live in Florida, Texas, or California all year round.

It seems a bit trivial to complain about one little error and attribute it to Attenborough. He is loads of fun to watch and has done a lot to show how interesting the natural world can be. Heck, he even made the Life of Plants fun to watch.
Maybe he should have a go at the Life of Rabbits next... Birdchick & Attenborough team up?

Sharon,
Something to followup on in your next phase of life....

From Life of Birds; Making the film
"The most logistically difficult trip was to the Himalayas, to film the mating behaviour of the Nepalese honeyguide. 40 porters carried the crew's gear, provisions and combs of dripping honey to attract the birds into an isolated valley. They found the birds, but mating never took place."

I'm sure you would make it happen...

Oh, and if he uses the word learnt one more time I'll just gag!

Fledgling
Gayle
