Southwest Minnesota Prairie Birding Festival
At yesterday's tourism meeting, it was said that last year in Minnesota we had 8 bird festivals. This year we have 14 going on throughout the year. Here's a new one I just learned about called the Southwest Minnesota Prairie Birding Festival going on April 20 - 21.
It's based out of Luverne, Minnesota and the trips are to Blue Mound State Park and Touch the Sky Prairie. Here's a link to a photo essay by Jim Brandenburg of Touch the Sky Prairie.
Alas, this is a new festival and in a tiny town so there's not much information online. In order to find out more information or book your space you need to contact the Luverne Chamber of Commerce. The upside of these new tiny festivals is that the field trips aren't too crowded and you get a lot of individual attention from the guides. This should be a great festival with breath taking prairie landscapes and really sweet birds--prairie bird songs are some of the best!
I love prairie birding and really want to do this one, but Non Birding Bill and I are performing Play on Birds at the North Coast Nature Festival the following weekend and we will be rehearsing.

I signed up for this festival. I, too was somewhat disappointed at the lack of information or a website. However, the people I spoke to at the toll-free number were extremely helpful. I was able to find lodging through the Luverne Chamber of Commerce website, and when making my motel reservation, I found out the owner of the motel is on the festival committee. They're very excited about the festival and it sounds like attendees won't be disappointed. If you've never heard Keith Radel speak about bluebirds or visited Blue Mounds State Park, I guarantee these 2 things alone will make it worth your $20 registration fee. Perhaps at the end of the festival, we can provide feedback asking for more web information to make it a better festival for 2008.
All right! You and NBB are coming to Cleveland. This is usually a pretty fun festival. Not on the scale of what you're used to, I'm sure, but still cool. I see on Saturday you're leading a Bird Chick Walk. Will NBB come too? I'm looking forward to it!
Will Non Birding Bill come and help lead a bird walk?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!
Giggle.
NBB's obligation is to Play on Birds only and since he has friends and family in Ohio he will be hanging with them. But, I'm really looking forward to this gig. I really like Ohio and I love doing general walks. We should see some great birds on this trip. Look forward to meeting you, Unsuspecting Birder.
ruthiej,
Thanks for the note on teh SW MN Prairie Fest. I'm going to seriously try and come to one day. I've always wanted to visit Blue Mound. If I don't make this year, next year for sure.
