Bill of the Birds Survey

Hey, Bill of the Birds has a survey up on how many field guides you own, if you would care to participate. I'm surprised by the number of participants so far who own too many field guides to count--I thought I was the only one.

I'd answer him, but my answer shouldn't count. This winter was the first time I have ever taken an interest in birds. I homeschool my son and we designed our classroom so that the desks look out the window. After spotting a few woodpeckers, we made a milk jug feeder. Then we bought one. Then we got a suet feeder. Then I bought the MN Guide to Birds, or whatever it is called. That book has answered all our questions -- I just need the CDs to go with it so I know whom is singing what.

Found your blog for the very reason.

Why do people hate the grackles so? I've actually enjoyed them, but for the fact that they clean out my feeders in a very short time.

Enjoy your blog very much. I'm also an Amtrak lover -- those sleepettes are wonderful.

Hi frankie--

Thanks for reading the blog.

Of course your answer counts--birders are a diverse group. We all have to start somewhere. You are well on your way...who knows, in five years you may have more than 10 field guides.

Grackles can be frustrating. People have their favorite birds, so let's say you really, really love chickadees, and when the grackles come, crowd out your chickadees, and eat five pounds of seed in less than twenty minutes it gets frustration. Grackles, like many bird species, will eat eggs and nestlings too so that does help their popularity points either. I don't hold that against them, every bird has a dark side.
