Another Bee Movie. This is Lorraine and Non Birding Bill making some minor adjustments to the hive after we put them back together.

What is smoldering in a bee smoker? Special bee smoker pellets?

Are those file drawer peices heavy? What keeps them from blowing over in high winds?

The smoker is filled with wood chips--so it kind of smells like burning trees. I'm told some bee keepers use cow patties...not me.

The file drawers are the brood boxes. Inside the box are the frames where the bees make the comb, grow new workers, and store honey and pollen. Initially they are not very heavy but by the end of the season (if we do everything properly) there will be three brood boxes: 2 full of bees and brood and 1 full of honey for them to feed off of all winter. The total weight for all three boxes is 200 pounds--Oof!
