Bring On The Bird Chochkies

I'm having some (good natured) issues over a recent post by Birdchaser. He states that real birders hate the Audubon Singing Bird Clock--we never carried that one at the bird store I worked at, but we did carry this one, and I kind of liked it. The singing loon clock was even better--it would wail like a loon every hour on the hour. Whether "real birders" liked them or not, the clocks were insanely popular with people who feed birds and far out sold items targeted towards hardcore birders.

Birdchaser goes on to say "the same goes for bird mugs, dishrags, or pillowcases--real birders hate 'em. There's a wide divide between bird people and bird mug people."

Well, I'm here to say, "No it doesn't!" Now, I know there are many out there who don't consider themselves a birder, even though they have a field guide (or even more than one bird book), a pair of binoculars, a spotting scope, bird call CDs, a vest, travel at least once a year to a place specifically to watch birds and wildlife, etc (FYI, if two or more items on that list apply to you--you're a birder). I am comfortable in saying that I'm a real birder and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the bird chochkies. Let's take a look at my bird mugs:

These are probably about half of the bird mugs that I own and most of them were purchased by me--not given to me as gifts. That's my second mad bluebird travel mug--as soon as I cracked my first one, I went out and bought a second one. Also, note the glass on the left--that was part of a set that came with a pitcher.

How could I say no to some of these mugs? How often do you find juncos as a graphic on a mug--this was a must have!

And the rosy-finch mug--there's even a rosy-finch on the inside of the mug--that is such an obscure bird to put on a mainstream mug. Cardinals you would expect--but a rosy-finch? Again, how could I possibly resist it? I have so many mugs that Non Birding Bill has tried to put a moratorium on how many we have in the house at one time. However, I can't help it if people give them to me:

Which brings me to one of my newest and most favorite of mugs. During the North Coast Nature Festival, I was marveling at all the turkey vulture merchandise at the Cleveland Metroparks Gift Shops. They ended up giving us swag bag full of turkey vulture stuff: mugs, socks, pins, etc. The above mug looks like a big rainy cloud over the woods when cold.

But, fill it up with hot tea or coffee and the cloud disappears to reveal a flock of turkey vultures--SWEET! As I was setting up the shot, I found another turkey vulture mug and stuck that in.

One of my favorite mugs was given to me by a friend in college. She didn't know it was inaccurate, but that is what made me fall in love with it. It reads house sparrow but is clearly a chipping sparrow. I love it!

And while we're talking about bird chochkies, lets look at my socks. Again, these aren't even half of my socks, but a quick raid of my sock drawer reveals socks with gyrfalcons, sandhill cranes, tanagers, great gray owls...

...turkey vulture socks...

...pileated woodpecker socks--a favorite...

...an ivory-billed woodpecker. Again, these are only half, but there are flamingos, another set of woodpecker socks, more owl socks, more cardinal socks--I'm a sucker for socks. Alas, I only wear them half the year.

Here is a heron/egret frame that I absolutely love. I was given this for pet sitting for a friend. Thanks, Barb.

Ah more gifts--my nondescript bird candle holders (part of a set of four) and who can forget my wren house with bunny wall paper on the outside? Now that was a gift with some thought--I'm a birder and I have rabbits--how could I not love that bird house.

I even have a beanie baby--a purple and blue condor/vulture. Again, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I'm sure if I dig a little deeper I could find more (oh, I forgot to post my yellow-rumped warbler throw cover--thank you thoughtful mother-in-law). But you get the idea. I'm Sharon. I'm a real birder. And I love the bird chochkies. Keep 'em coming manufacturers, keep 'em coming.

Perhaps this has more to do with male vs female shopping habits? I'm not sure I could picture Birdchaser wearing my pink flamingo socks. How about you? Anyone else out there got love for the bird paraphernalia?

Maybe he meant to say 'male birders'. Or more accurately 'straight male birders'. Not that there's anything wrong with that (of course).

I do have a bird clock in the kitchen (a gift, and I disabled the calls), and a couple of David Sibley bird coffee mugs. Of course I have a few bird prints around here and there, and I do have a few bird Christmas ornaments....okay, crap, I must be gay. Oh well, it's off to see Dreamgirls for me.

I qualify for the definition of "birder' by virtue of my pair of binoculars and numerous birding books. We used to travel at least once a year specifically to bird (Galveston), but we haven't been brave enough to try with our daughter, 2. Anyway, I love the bird stuff too! I have the mug you pictured with the juncos on it, and my husband uses the mug with the "Chorus Line" picture on it. I have a throw, a music box, the Marjolein Batin bird tree, porcelain wrens from Russia, owls made of gourds from Mexico- I love it all too! Could it really just be a man-woman thing?!

I started collecting bird figurines in college long before I considered myself a birder. I cannot pass up a bird mug, I have that bird clock (proudly NOT disabled), I am nuts about bird socks (there is some serious envy going on right now looking at your socks). Bird pins make me happy and so do bird kitchen towels! Then there are the decorative/unusual bird houses all over my family room.

Did I mention the sweatshirts and Christmas ornaments? Oh- and I just got a Pfaltzgraff chickadee serving plate and matching mugs on eBay.

Whew- I feel a little better now. I'm not alone any more.

I take birding pretty seriously, but I also seriously love to buy/collect things with birds on them too. I have a bird blanket, a necklace, a couple of shirts, pajama pants, a wall calendar, postcards and cards. I also like to make my own decorative bird art. It's starting to get bad since I bought a notebook at Target the other week just because it had a pretty design with a bird on it and absolutely didn't need it for any other reason.

I will definitely consider starting a mug and sock collection someday.

Whenever anyone finds out a person likes bird watching, it opens the door for little presents related to birds. I am a birder and a registered nurse. Yes, I have dozens of bird things, just as I have dozens of nurse things. And they all give me joy. Woe to anyone who criticizes me for loving them.

I wouldn't consider a "Birder" but I love watching birds. I also have to confess I have a few bird chochkies of my own mostly with chickens, some humming bird stuff & since I have an African Parrot I like things with parrots on them.

I have binos, 2 field guides, and several books on bird behaviour. I just bought contact lenses because I don't like how my glasses fog up on cold days when I'm birding. I keep a spare pair of (crappy) binos just in case I can convince a non-birding friend to go out birding.

Nonetheless, I consider myself a new birder... and I spend quite a bit of time trying to convince people that it's not a geeky hobby! Those who appreciate me like it because, as they say, "at least you have interests" and that makes me easy to buy for:)

But I didn't know about the birding SWAG!!! After looking at your stash, I'm thinking I need more bird chotchkes (sp?)... I'm especially jealous of the socks...

I do have to ask... What do birders need vests for?

Dea,

Here is a probably-not-quite-complete list of the contents of my vest during a recent week-long birding trip in the midwest.

- Sibley Guide (left velcro pocket)
- Digital Voice Recorder (another left pocket)
- iPod with portable speakers (right velcro pocket)
- Optical lens cleaner solution (right mini-pocket)
- Optical lens cloth (right mini-pocket)
- Mini-Notebook (chest pocket)
- Pencil (with notebook)
- Candy bar (okay, it wasn't there past the first full day...)
- Infant nasal aspirator, aka "booger getter"; I use one to blow air over lenses to clean them.

I think that's almost the whole inventory. You can never be too prepared in the field.

I don't have a love for the bird paraphanelia, but I did look longingly at your socks.
I have a bit of a sock "thing."
I do not own any white socks at all and maybe only 3 or 4 pairs of solid color socks. No two pairs are alike. All my socks have a design or pattern of some sort and many are various animals. I think all I have for birds though are penguins and flamingos. Lately I've been digging stripes...

I have the clock. (Enabled)
I have socks.
I have mugs.
I have the bins.
I have the field guides.
I have a calendar. (Yours and Stans!)
I have sit-abouts.
I have an original Zickefoose.
I am a birder, and proud of it.
And you gave me a good idea for a post.

I don't think bird chochkies make or break who is or isn't a birder, though. It's personal taste.
There are people who have worked for RAPTOR for 20 years, but they don't think of themselves as "birders". I blather on about my trips and sightings, and their eyes glaze over if I don't talk about raptors. Interesting, huh?

What a fun post, Sharon. I have the singing loon clock and the singing bird clock (a gift from a co-worker many years ago). Just for fun, I set the birds ahead 6 hours so a different bird sings than what's on the clock (that way I get to hear the great horned owl), but other non-birding people visiting will say, "that doesn't sound like a wren"

A mental inventory of all my "bird chochkies" reveals no bird socks, so I've got some catching up to do with other bird lovers...

Oh, ruthiej, you naught girl!

When I would go into stores or friend's houses that had the clock and the birds that didn't match up, I would reset them.

You can't have an owl calling when the clock is pointing to a tanager...that's...that's...insane!

Or maybe just I am.

All the birders I know (mostly women) have birding stuff: t-shirts, mugs, earrings, caps, etc. I think Percy's right--only straight white guys who have to maintain their "I'm straight and male and white and thus have no sentimentality in me!" macho "mystique" are anti-chochkie. Their loss! Bring on the bird-stuff!

Things I learned from this blog:
1) There are alternative spellings of "Tchotchke"
2) There are David Sibley mugs
3) I NEED turkey vulture socks
4) Apparently I must be a straight white male 'cause I ain't got any o' them bird chochkies yet

Oh no, will ordering vulture socks and a Sibley mug undermine my butch credibility?

We're heading up the the Great Adirondack Birding Celebration in Paul Smiths this weekend to set up a vendor booth. Reading the origin of this post made me worry about my product mix, but seems like there's lots of support of chochkies out there. I'm going with the chochkies - stop me if I'm making a mistake!!!

By your definition I'm a birder --at least four bird books, we have a scope and binoculars, plus a CD of Pennsylvania bird calls. I'm a female and I don't own any bird stuff. I don't really have a desire to own bird stuff but it's okay with me if other birders own it. Although I could imagine owning some bird related things, I wouldn't want the bird clocks. I think there's room in the world for all of us. :-)

I don't have any bird doodads (aside from the chicken stuff the MIL sends), but you have Pileated Woodpecker socks?!? Seriously, I might have to get me some of those. Sweet!
