How I Spent My Wednesday Night
Mr. Neil had a bat in his home and while trying to get it back outside, we shot this 20 second film:
Well, at least he has something to fall back on in case the writing thing doesn't pan out. Bonus points to anyone who can id the bat--I sure can't.
The bat did make it back outdoors safe and sound without any grabbing. I have to say it was fun to just stand there, try hard to resist the urge to duck and let the bat maneuver around you.

I hope he has better luck with the dog training. :-D
I'm guessing big brown bat? Not because I can see it worth a darn (you guys didn't teach it to sit or stay? c'mon!) but aren't they pretty common around there?
Ok Maureen stole my guess, so I'll say Indiana Bat because they're endangered and barely make it into MN. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_bat
That bat fared a lot better than the one that was in the dorm room next to mine in college. Over-zealous cop + tennis racket = not good.
Hmm...I'm thinking that the use of treats may have worked better. ;-)
well, hmmm, if you stop going on your daytime birding adventures and only blog after dusk, before dawn, if the content gets bizarre... i think we can safely conclude it was a vampire bat

I knew Neil would call you to get that bat. Too bad your not into spiders otherwise I get you help a friend of his Poppy Z.Brite who has a invansion of wolf spiders in her New Orleans house. Acourse her 18 assassins aka cats have eaten the ones she has found so far.
But then you already might know her, since she into birding too.

What ? AGAIN ?
Stray animals have it for him...
Only judging by the size it was most likely a Big Brown Bat. Possibly a Hoary Bat. Was there any silver colored fur on the back?
Side Note: Pillow cases work great for capturing bats that get indoors.
Just a quick question; what happen to the bat after you finished shoting the frighten critter? I'm rather fond of bats. You didn't hurt the little thing?
As already stated in the blog entry: "The bat did make it back outdoors safe and sound without any grabbing."
We simply closed all the doors except for the front door which we left open and stood still while waiting for the bat to find its way out. The 20 second movie was filmed while we waited and I'd say about 30 seconds after we filmed it, the bat flew outside.
and you've had several lucid entries since this one so it seems my id guess was wrong...
Thanks for answering my questions, the visual completely took out of my mind the text you have written. I was just worry for the bat did seem it was acting out of fear and I was a bit concerned that it may had hurt itself flying in the confines of that narrow hallway. I know that neither you are Neil would harm the critter but sometimes a creature in fear does hurt itself looking for an escape. I'm happy to read that it was a film with a happy ending! Bless you.
