Wow, that's incredible. But I feel sort of sorry for the deer. What happens to it? One of the reasons I just can't watch Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom (ugh, just dated myself!). :) Kathy
You know, I talk about goldens a little bit in my talks, to demostrate the range of prey that raptors enjoy in this country. I start with kestrels eating grasshoppers and cicadas, and then work my way up to the golden eagle being able to take down a small deer. But I had never seen it. Holy crap is right! At least it's more sporting than a shotgun.
hey BC check out my site when you have a moment - Ollie's memory is being honored by the opportunity to bring home a beautiful 8 year old Rhodesian that needs a good second chance at a home! It has helped the grief of the loss tremendously by going forward with adopting a new guy that needs a home! I rescued ollie and i know he'd want me to keep on!
Hi Laura, it is not German (I would know) and I don't think hunting roe deer with an eagle would be legal in Germany, the hunting regulations are very strict. But it does sound like German, so it could well be Swedish, Danish or some other "Nordic" language.
I actually think they're speaking a Slavic language (I speak Czech and think that they're saying something to the effect of "that's good, stay there").
Wow, that's pretty incredible! Small deer against big bird- really cool!
I wonder how much trouble it is to get the deer away from the eagle! :D
Lends some support to the old Indian stories about large birds carrying off people, especially children!
I'm surprised by the sqeamish here though, do you people not eat meat? Nature is so cool, and we evolved as part of that food chain as well. We kill and eat 2 or 3 deer a year in my family. All legally during the course of our fall hunting season in TN. You see some pretty amazing stuff out in the woods.
i just looked this up it appears to me it is a muntjac deer and it is from china which the launge sound asian to me this deer would be around 43 cm which would be about the size you've seen but this is being put off as a white tail and there is no way a hawk, eagle or turkey vulture would even mess with a white tail.thanks mth
I find it hard to believe that the bird could actually kill the deer. It grabbed the deer and the deer went down but I don't see how it could have actually killed the deer.

That's AMAZING!
If that was my bird, I'd be terrified that it would get hurt doing that sort of thing, but clearly it can handle itself just fine!
Well I have heard of about every kind of dog chasing deer, and a cat, even cows, but not a bird.

Am talking house cat, not a large one, would a rabbit chase a deer ?
Holy carp is right.
Hee - was that a mental slip. Holy Crap not carp...

Not so sure if I wanted to see that or not (though I still clicked on it)! Anyone know what the outcome was? Looked pretty rough for both species.
Looks like a Eurasian Roe Deer which is smaller than the North American White-tailed Deer. Still remarkable though!
Definitely a holy crap moment!
Yes, Holy Crap is right. Wow - how interesting but I must admit I find it to be disturbing. We know it happens but we don't see it! ~~Shiver~~
Jochen is right--it does look like a smaller species, and the fact that the voices sound like they're speaking in German supports that.
wowzers!

The eagle in question is a Berkut golden eagle from Mongolia. They are often used to hunt deer.

Usually here in Iowa our common house sparrows kill the deer on a regular basis
