35W Bridge, Who Knew?

Well, this was supposed to be returning to the usual blog antics, but I just don't have it in me to post on some bald birds today.

Before.

After.

Here is a link to a flickr account of a photo series of the bridge collapse taken from a boat on the Mississippi River. A friend of NBB's sent the link. They were having their company party and taking a boat ride along the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities. They were 15 minutes away from being right under the 35W bridge.

My heart and thoughts go out to people still waiting to hear information on loved ones, and for the injured and dead. I think of all the construction workers who have been walking the bridge, wondered how they are from the fall. The number of dead is remarkably low, especially when you think about the bus that was full of 60 kids coming back from a summer field trip. I'm proud of all the Minnesota spirit. So many acts of heroism, especially the people who came from their own wrecked vehicles and ignored their own injuries to get the children out of the bus.

I think so many of us in the Twin Cities are shell shocked about the bridge because it could have been any of us or our friends and family on the bridge at that time. One of the advantages of where our apartment is located is that we are right next to major highways to get anywhere quickly. I used the 35W bridge daily--sometimes several times a day to get to The Raptor Center, to go to Hawk Ridge, Target, my friend Amber's home, Bill used it just 24 hours before it collapsed to visit our buddy Jody the librarian. It never seemed like a bridge--it was a four lane highway, you never really thought of it as a bridge--it was big and safe. It had one of my favorite views of downtown Minneapolis, and I remember once driving over on a winter night and the crow roost had been disturbed. It was 10pm and the overcast sky was kind of purple from the reflection of the city lights and you could see thousands of crows swirling over the bridge in the night sky--an owl must have flown through.

Yesterday, I was taking a long drive home from Indianapolis. It had not been a pleasure visit, and I was chewing on unblogable events on the drive home. I approached a highway bridge in Illinois that was having some construction done, it was very high above a large river. Panic suddenly bubbled up from inside me, I had sense that I could fall off at any moment. My hands were shaking, my heart pounding in my chest. If there had been space to pull over, I would have. There was no place safe to pull over, and I tried to get hold of myself, "What is this? You drive over rivers all the time, you are safe. You already hate to fly, you're not going to be afraid to cross bridges."

The panic passed, and I focused on the birds flying over. This has NEVER happened to me before, I've never been afraid of falling off a bridge. I attributed it to stress from the visit. I entered the Twin Cities at 6pm. Nearing my home, I put in my ear piece and called my mom to tell her that I had made it back to the Twin Cities safely. As we talked and I was on I-94 approaching 35W, I saw news helicopters circling close together. I thought that it was odd, but just thought that there must have been a bad accident. As I passed the exits for 35W that dump onto 94, I braced myself for the stand still traffic that comes at that exit at that time of night. There was no traffic and I made it to my exit with ease. As I hung up from my mom, I thought how odd that I got through rush hour traffic so smoothly, but remembered that lots of construction had been happening and 35W and maybe traffic had been rerouted while I was gone--that would also help explain the news helicopters.

I still had my ear piece in and called out to my phone to call Bill to warn him that I was five minutes away. The phone didn't dial. I tried it four times, each time, the call didn't go through. Finally, the fifth time it went through and I gave him the warning. Finished with my calls, I turned on the radio and heard the unfamiliar voices of tv anchors on my radio station. I came in during the middle of the report. From what I gathered, there was a fire on 35W, several cars involved, sounded like ten cars. Also, it sounded as if part of the 35W bridge had collapsed. I thought, "Well, that explains the helicopters, there's a really bad accident and perhaps with the construction some part of the road fell in the river."

We came in and turned on the tv and saw that the whole bridge fell in the river, during rush hour. I had no idea of the magnitude of what happened. We immediately tried to call friends and family to touch base, and couldn't get our calls out. The news said cell phone companies said to clear the lines, emergency calls weren't getting through, so I put the notice in my blog--which I'm so glad I did. This morning I'm finding all kinds of cell messages that I didn't get from family and friends who couldn't get hold of us last night.

I thought back to my panic on the highway bridge in Illinois earlier in the day. I'm not big believer in psychics or esp. But the coincidence does have me thinking--was it some kind of sixth sense triggering a warning. Probably not, but it was strange nonetheless.

Now the magnitude is really setting in. This was a major connection between Minneapolis and St. Paul, it handled a huge amount of traffic, it's going to take time to figure out new routes. Early reports say that we won't have a new bridge for year...I think it's going to be even longer than that. I'm thinking that we are a few years away from having a bridge again. Authorities have to figure out what happened and then there has to be a redesign and then construction, it's hard to wrap your head around this one.

Glad you are ok. I am a reader, not someone you "know" but I was concerned...I was thinking of you last night while watching "Winged Migration" on Animal Planet...Didn't hear about the bridge collapse until I got to work this morning, though! (I have been avoiding the news channels) I hope everything turns out okay for everyone affected by this.

Wow, I can almost feel your fingers shaking as you typed that reenactment.

Even though we've never met, your spot here was amongst the first that I checked to see if you and NBB were alright.

I stayed up until about 3:00am, drifting in and out of sleep, watching CNN showing the news over and over again. So sad, it just squeezes at the heart. It takes awhile for the events like this to sink in and I want to know if there's a logical explanation for why it happened, but so far there isn't.

I don't personally believe in coincidences and feel that everything, good and bad happens just the way it's supposed to.

I think what you had was a premonition/intuition of some sort when you were crossing the bridge. Those are very important to listen to, although you don't often understand the meaning until later, after you're through the woods and can look back.

It's been a crazy few days, eh!

When you look outside, everything else seems to be normal, the world keeps spinning. A twitch in the universe has happened though and nothing will ever be exactly the same again and yet...you carry on.

Maybe a walk in the woods to visit some bees might be therapeutic.

Mr. Neil was good to post a message that he and his are fine, so that's very good news too.

Take care, B.

That is too wierd. In the midst of the tragedy, I present you with this startlingly interesting set of events coming together:

A co-worker got me interested in the web comic User Friendly. The author of UF went to a Sci-Fi/Linux convention in Detroit call Penguicon. I couldn't attend Penguicon 1, but I managed to attend Penguicon 2. Met Mr. Neil, got interested in his stuff and his blog. I've been reading it avidly ever since. I hopped over to the Birdchick blog via Neil's posts about bees, and I've found myself enjoying it. So my connection to Birdchick is entirely through Science Fiction connections.

Your blog said today:

The reason that I knew about the bridge collapse was that my father called me last night, because my brother called him to say that he was Ok, he saw the bridge collapse but wasn't on it. It turns out that he (my brother) was on a paddle boat cruise with his company that had gone under the bridge 15 minutes before. My brother is named David Steffen, he works for a company that makes cameras with embedded computers that measure traffic. So either my brother works with your friend or this is a startling coincidence.

The photos are mine. Dave Steffen works with me. I don't believe I know Birdchick, tho', so this seems to be a friend of a friend thing going on.

I really should proof read my post before I hit the publish button.

I work in St Paul close to the Raptor Center and the 35w Bridge that collapsed. Today I went down with a coworker who crossed the bridge about an hour before it fell and took a couple pictures. It was hard to get close with most views being blocked off but I posted the pics up on my blog at ecobirder.blogspot.com

I already have a fear of bridges, this just re-confirms that this CAN and does happen.

I feel for the people who will experience this fear now, it's horrible, and it happens every time I approach a bridge so I can totally identify with your description.

I did stop by lastnight to make sure that you and NBB were ok, and I'm glad you are. My heart just aches for everyone involved in this.

Weird panic attack.
The whole city (well both of them) must be in total shock.
I don't suppose "they" know how it happened and why yet ?

Ah, Hello Michael. I'm not sure if we've met or not in realspace. You know DeNae Leverenz, a friend of mine from College.

Upon closer inspection of the original post, I realized I mis-read this bit:

Here is a link to a flickr account of a photo series of the bridge collapse taken from a boat on the Mississippi River. A friend of NBB's sent the link.

NBB is BirdChick's husband. I thought it had said that a friend of NBB's posted the photos, which would have been you (Michael). As you can see, it actually says a friend of his sent the link, so there's no direct connection after all.

Still a small world, just not quite that small. Still hoping for a minimum of casualties and maximum of gained knowledge to prevent it from happening again.

We now return to regular, bird-related comments.

i'm just in awe and reminded of the true heart of the american spirit - how we care for one another and come together in spite of differences to help each other, encourage, pray, rebuild...

i read so many posts (including mine) of "i don't know you but have been reading your blog and when i heard about the bridge i thought of you and NBB" ...

what an amazing thing - i think it's very much the heart and spirit of this great country.

thanks Sharon, for sharing your experience, i'm sure it was helpful for you to write it as much as reading and hearing the experiences have been helpful for us who aren't there but are concerned.

Small world or not, it doesn't matter where we are, we are all internet neighbors. I too am one of the multitude that don't know you or NBB personally, but as soon as I saw the collapse on the news, my thoughts rushed right to the two of you. I'm so glad you're ok.

Birdchick - my prayers and thoughts to all those folks involved. I am glad you and NBB are all right. When I heard about this disaster, right away I thought back to another disastrous day in history - Oct 17, 1989 - more local for me. That was the day we had a 7.1 earthquake and Oakland experienced a devastating collapse of part of I880, and San Francisco had a partial bridge collapse of the Bay Bridge. And sadly, this also happened during rush hour. I hope and pray there are very few fatalities.

I live in the twin cities too. It was very strange to come into work this morning and not know if all of my co-workers would be there. The news reporters didn't have any names and many of my coworkers live in Minneapolis or Roseville or St. Anthony and commute on 35W all the time. Fortunately, everyone was here. Also, it wasn't just cell phones that were busy. My parents tried to call us at our home phone number last night and could not get through because all circuits were busy. When we tried to call my in-laws, our call out wouldn't go through either.

Glad to know that you're all safe-- such a horrible thing.

Your hives are lovely! So glad the ailing hive is on the mend. I hope your rounds turn out well!

What are you using to extract honey now-- did you get a centrifuge, or make something of your own?

Thanks for the note Liz.

We have opted to produce comb honey. We're trying out two different types of frames, a wooden frame and the Ross Round. All we have to do is cut out the comb and put it into the container--it's super easy and super tasty.

Thanks for posting your experience. I have been a quiet lurker admiring your blog for awhile. I wouldn't dismiss your intuitions (psychic, esp or otherwise) it has long been said that we all have these abilities in us, they just haven't been developed.
Glad you are safe!
