So sweet! They remind me of Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail. (Peter is off making mischief somewhere)

Sharon, I have a question. My family is thinking about getting a bird - can you give me any recommendations on where to begin finding the best bird for us. We have two boys 5, 10 and want a social bird that we can get very close to. I'm worried about the noise level too, but so far love the Conures. I'm also considering a Senegal. We have no other pets and I know little about birds. We will spend a lot of time reading before we actually bring one home, but I thought you might have a few tips for me to start looking. Thanks, Emily erowe1@stny.rr.com

They look like food critics.
"The cuisine is uninspired and the greens overcooked."
For my education, what is it that they are eating ?

Honestly--I don't recommend birds as pets. They are very high maintenance, very social, in need of constant attention, and are very manipulative to get attention. Most species (apart from budgerigars) live to be anywhere from 18 - 60 years old. Birds also have the mental capacity of a two year old. If you can live with a two year old for a few decades, then a bird might be for you. Keep in mind they are flock animals, so when you go away or on vacation, you will need to find another flock for them to hang with. Birds not caring for change are going to hold a grudge against you when you get back.

I would recommend visiting a group like Midwest Avian Adoption, they offer captive bird care, essentail (ie, wish I had taken it before we got Kabuki--I love our cockatiel, but I would be a better owner for her had I taken that class).

I wonder if you've ever seen Annies Cheddar or Wheat bunnies in the store? They have a Bunny Seal of Approval.
