Great Hawk Banding

Ehn.

I am so tired, worn out, bruised, and have a feeling of overall contentment. It was an awesome hawk banding weekend and some in depth posting will be coming, but for now, I'm going to soak, sleep and read about Jim Stevenson in People Magazine (interesting that it takes shooting a feral a cat about to attack an endangered bird before a birder gets a profile, but that People for ya').

In the meantime, here is a preview of hawk banding:

The Jim Stevenson thing happened about the time you were in Nebraska I thought-- in any event it is fairly old news so, what does that say about People Mag--need filler?

I've read about the whole cat shooting thing from the beginning, mostly at Birding Is Not A Crime. I didn't blog about it since so many others were doing a fine job and I didn't really have anything new to add to the comments out there.

I can just hear the editorial meeting for People Magazine:

Editor 1:
Dude, did you hear about the bird watcher that shot and killed a cat?"

Editor 2: No way, aren't they supposed to be like old and stuff?

Editor 3: Way! Some old guy shot like a cat and stuff?

Editor 1: We should totally write stuff about this dude and how like all crazy and hard core he is about birds and like cats are pets and should not be shot.

Editor 2: Totally!

Editor 3: Totally!

Editor 1: Totally!

Personally, I think both parties in the cat shooting incident are idoits--if you want to remove feral cats, be stealthy, there are many discreet ways of doing it. If you feed and nurture feral cats, don't be surprised when they die. They guy that was taking care of the feral cats said that he had buried 10 shot cats already--if he was so worried about his precious pets--why let them roam when you know someone is gunning for them??

Animals get removed all the time when it comes to endangered species (even native animals): cowbirds are removed from Kirtland warbler nesting areas; gulls, foxes, cats, and other predators are removed from piping plover ares; heck, when they first reintroduced peregrine falcons, great horned owls were removed. And when I say "removed" I do mean killed. I don't know, people who say cats should be running around outdoors and killing birds and small mammals and bird lovers should just deal with it are fast to change their tune when coyotes move into their area and start eating their cats. Then all of a sudden it's time to kill the native predator eating to survive (unlike the cat killing for fun).

Well said Birdchick! I followed your link and it is always a riot how the media, People in this instance, can twist around things.

"Texas bird-lover Jim Stevenson causes an uproar when he shoots a neighborhood cat" says People mag.

Neighborhood cat?? Odd place for a neighborhood...

Anyways, having fun reading about hawk banding...
