What's On A Downy Woodpecker's Mind

Technically, that answer is its tongue, but I just thought this was a cute photo. The goldfinch in the background looks like it's trying to freak out this downy woodpecker:

"I don't like the way that goldfinch is staring at me. Why is he staring at me?"

How come your northern Goldfinches are still gold? Mine in SW Ohio are already in their winter garb.

I see why you like the feeder with the wave at the bottomw - it fits a Downy Woodpecker's tail perfectly.

I was wondering the same thing about the goldfinches. Those here in Pittsburgh are beginning to look more wintery, too-- I haven't seen bright yellow males like that one for at least a month. Are there variations in color change for different goldfinch populations depending on the region?

It's a startling record of Wildlife Menace you've got going this week-- Goldfinch Stalker, the Vigilante Bitches*...
