Disapproving Rabbits in USA Today's Blog
This is the weirdest sensation I've ever had. The Pop Candy blog at USA Today has a mention of the Disapproving Rabbits book...and they are encouraging people to buy it...and I'm not related to anyone on staff...the blogger did of her own accord. Thanks, Whitney!

Wow! That's a really cool blog. Congrats!
That is awesome.
If you build it (or in this case, write it) they will come.
Marvelous news, Sharon - well done indeed!
Congratulations. Unfortunately this book will probably end up causing the death of many rabbits. Books with cute pictures of rabbits encourage people to go out and get rabbits as pets. Then when they find out that they are not good pets they usually end up having to be destroyed. People do not realize that rabbits are messy, they chew everything, and they are not personable. They only see the cute fluffy bundles of fur that you put in your book. I guess it does not matter, the important thing is that you are making some money.
I was going to remove the above cowardly comment but, I will answer it this once and any further anonymous/passive aggressive comments will be deleted.
The book and Cinnamon's online bio stresses that Cinnamon is an adopted rabbit from the Humane Society. The books intro discourages rabbit ownership. Both my websites and the book directs people to www.rabbit.org which very clearly talks about what people need to know up front about rabbit ownership.
Maybe, just maybe someone considering rabbit ownership will learn of the House Rabbit Society through either the book or my websites and go into the relationship better informed.
Boy, I hate anonymous commenters who drop that kind of negative juju and then slink away. Congrats on this great plug for your book!
If anon. was a regular reader of the blog, he would know that you would never do such a book just for "some money," and that you're a responsible bunny owner who advocates for responsible ownership. This guy probably thought that the kids' book Pat the Bunny was exploitative as well.
What-evah! Let's face it: the important is that Cinnamon approves of the book.
My favorite comment over at USA Today was:
"This Sharon lady because of this stupid book will be eating lobster in her mansion every day .....& those stupid rabbits disapprove of me ? I'm not exploiting you little bunny . Sharon is your enemy (pimp)."
LOL! My favorite comment thus far. Forget the online identity of Birdchick! I want everyone to start calling Bunny Pimp! I must go out and get a wide brimmed hat with a giant purple feather and find some leopard print with hot pink lace trim onesies for Cinnamon.
So you put a few lines in your intro to make yourself look better. You are still exploiting animals to make a buck.
"exploting" animals by essentially displaying how much she loves them and how cool she thinks they are? what is WRONG with celebrating animals when you are crazy about them? they're PICTURES of peoples' pets, not bunnies dressed up in Easter baskets. You people need to get a grip.
Boy, I hate anonymous commenter’s who drop that kind of negative juju and then slink away.
This is not the kind of book that done to help the animals or teach people or raise awareness. This type of book is done for publicity and money and that is exploitation. If you want a good book about celebrating animals go and buy Laura Erickson’s book 101 Ways To Help Birds
I agree, Laura Erickson's book is a great book and people should buy it and learn and do what they can to help wildlife. It's completely different from Disapproving
Rabbits.
There's no reason why we can't both help birds, rabbits, bees, animals, etc and laugh about them being cute, disapproving, etc. There's room for all types of personalities on the planet.
Well, I guess notoriety is a double-edged sword. Congrats on the un-solicited publicity. I like to think that for each negative accusatory person who posts their opinions on here there are countless more who have now been introduced to and appreciate the moment of cuteness each day (as it was intended) in silence.
No, no, no, there is no room in this world for people with different personalities and/or ideas. No room, no room at all.
Hey there Bunny Pimp! You are amazing. I don't think I could have been so calm and cool in my responses :-) I had never had rabbits - my first came from a friend whose son couldn't keep it. At about that time I was introduced to Disapproving Rabbits thru a friend who found you on StumbleUpon. I didn't have a clue about the fact they can be litter box trained, can be in the house like cats (don't need to be left in cages) need a diet of mostly hay and on and on and on.
Disapproving Rabbits and the links to house rabbit and others and hearing others' comments was a great edumacation for me. I now have 2 (had as many as 5) very happy, healthy rabbits. And since Luther (riena's husbun) just passed last week I'm looking for another. rabbits are a joy, very different, distinct personalities, smart and fun pets.
I am grateful for DR and birdchick.com and all the links and people who blog with you that i have learned tons from in the last couple of years! and i'm glad you are getting blessed financially by the phenom.. tho i'm guessing it's not gonna make you rich... veggies are expensive and cinnamon is demanding!
so... phblbbbt on anonymous and others who just don't understand what a good thing DR really is :-)

aka archi's mum
birdchickadee: i don't have an account and can't be bothered to make one. but i had to comment:
"This is not the kind of book that done to help the animals or teach people or raise awareness."
Is there really a stick so far up your ass that nothing can ever just be for the pure joy of it? ok, so the book doesn't promote "awareness.." but it isn't irreponsible or misleading in any way either. It's just a book about some awesomely cool and hilarious animals. get OVER IT!
p.s. sharon, love the book, the blog, everything. i'll stop answering to these simpletons now!
Thanks, readers, and I think we've wasted enough brain power on the recent trolls in the comments. Honestly, I'm really surprised it hasn't happened sooner.
There are people who are very against any type of animal exploitation. If I agreed with that, then I can't enjoy things like Cute Overload or I Can Has Cheezburger (check out their ad rates) or any naturalist that uses injured birds or animals for programs and charge money, or pay for any pro bird guide to take me out to see specific birds--that is all considered exploitation. I don't want to live in that world.
Comparing Disapproving Rabbits to 101 Ways To Help Birds is just silly. Number 1--Laura Erickson and I are friends and we support each other and tell people to buy our books. Number 2--comparing DR to 101 is like comparing a Twinkie to Tiramisu. One dessert is layered with wonderous bits that blend together and make you wonder how to live your life to make the world a better place. The other is a sugary piece of fluff wrapped in plastic that can make you smile for about 15 - 20 minutes in the late afternoon.
If you don't get DR, don't worry. No one is forcing you to come to my sites, read any of my writings, or purchase any of my books.
Bunny Pimp! (Pimpette?)
You can be both...Birdchick by day, Bunnypimp by night.
I don't think Venus carries anything in Cinnamon's size though.:(
Lake Street, here you come! And you hardly have to travel or anything :P
Somehow I missed the comments on this until today. Of course I want everyone in the universe to buy, or at least read, 101 Ways to Help Birds. It's my Rachel Carson book--probably the most important project I'll ever work on. But what the heck does that have to do with Sharon's witty and cool book? I'm very proud of her--of the fun she infuses into every single thing she does and how she brings lots of young, non-geeky people into birding, opening their hearts and minds to the world of nature so that they may, one day, consider reading a book like mine.
Disapproving Rabbits is fun and fluffy, and thanks to Sharon's clear identification as a birder, opens the world of birding to a whole new group of rabbit lovers who might never have thought about wild birds before their enjoyable encounters with Sharon. I don't know--her book may even deserve a nomination for the Stephen T. Colbert Award for the Literary Excellence.
