Injured Peregrine Update

Quick update on the injured peregrine falcon, I went to check on her and she was resting. Steve, one of the participants on the bird trip that picked her up called The Raptor Center and got a rundown from Dr. Jane Goggin:

"The Raptor Center left a message on Friday, Oct. 5, about Falcon 568. Jane said our girl was doing pretty well at this time, but it would be 3-4 weeks before the splint would be removed. She'll probably spend the winter a TRC. Jane suggested calling back in a couple weeks for an update. Sounds pretty good to my untrained ear and her appetite certainly seems fine."

I'm at TRC every Tuesday and will do a check in. They have my number to give me a call with any developments if something happens when I'm not there. Honestly, no news at this point is good news. Here's hoping that in a few weeks, I will have photos of her upright in a flight room.

In other news, no one has stepped up to claim ownership of the eclectus. TRC has tried everything--all the local parrot organizations, parrot stores, vets, Craig's List and no one is coming forward as the owner. I wonder if something happened to the actual owner? When you see the bird, it is in excellent health and well trained. Someone spent a lot of time, energy, love and money on this bird. A bird like this can outlive the owner. I'm wondering if the actual owner died and the surviving family not wanting to keep it, let it go outside--sounds crazy, but I've had people tell me about doing this kind of thing before. They know nothing of birds and they think it's a tribute--to set grandma's bird free. Who knows. Again, there is a long line of folks at TRC ready to take him in, I just wish we could find out who it belongs to.

Go PF Go!

That is sad about the parrot, but at least if no one else claims him, he will have plenty of potential adopters. He's beautiful! And so is the PF.

It can take a long time for two people to connect on this kind of thing---I lost my tiel and had her in all the local papers, around the net and up on fliers---after two weeks somebody spotted a flier---and she had only gotten 1 block away (clipped wings didn't stop her from flying scared from a loud noise but did keep her in the area)

Another possibility is that it was somebody traveling with the bird (motorhomes, etc), so may not know precisely how to contact local organizations to find the lost bird.

I posted something regarding the parrot to the Saint Anthony Park listserv. Someone may want to do the same for the Como Park, Merriam Park, and Prospect Park neighborhood groups.

Also cheering for the PF.

Is it possible the bird came from another state or similar? I knew someone with a missing cat from Michigan turned up in lower Ohio (bless the chip!).

I'm wondering if maybe the local shelters spread the news around.

I'm curious about the peregrine. What is her history? I see she has no leg bands. Were they cut off or did she come in unanded? If she was banded, where did she fledge from? Where was she rescued and what was the story? Too many questions, I know, but many will want to know!

Thanks Sharon for the PF update....I've been thinking about this beautiful (ILOVE brown) and very lucky raptor lots lately. Looking forward to more great photos and you are so right that at this time no news IS good news. Thanks!

I'm glad to hear that the peregrine falcon is on the mend. That's a long time that she'll have to wear the splint and her muscles will be weak for a little while after that.
Does she have a name yet?

Hi Diane,

If you look at the blog entry you will see that early on "injured peregrine falcon" is highlighted in red. Click on that, and that will give you some back story. Also, if you look at the end of the entry under labels you will again see "injured peregrine falcon" and that will take you to all the entries that I have written about her and tell you what I know about her so far.

bluesaffron,

TRC usually doesn't name birds (unless someone decides to pay her entire hospital bill, then they can name a bird). TRC gets on average 800 birds a year and the vets do care a great deal but do want to avoid forming huge emotional attachments.

I'll pass everyone's suggestions about the eclectus on to TRC. I didn't think about someone just passing through. I'm not sure about the eclectus coming from another state. This bird is flighted, but doesn't appear to be very good at long distance flying.

Well at least the parrot didn't show up at Mr. Neil's house, this seems to be his year for collecting new pets. Then his cats would have really done a revolution. I know that parrot would have been the boss, even giving Cabal a run for his money.

Two organizations that specialize in reuniting lost birds with their owners are www.birdhotline.com and www.911parrotalert.com.
