Give Kat Doc Advice
This question came in through the comments from Kat Doc:
Great bittern photos! What a problem to have, to be "too close" to a bittern.
Birdchick, I am going to Orlando later this month. After my veterinary conference (5 days locked inside of hotel convention rooms) I have 3 days free. Any suggestions on places to go birding near Orlando?
~Kathi
Any Florida readers have a suggestion for her? I told her that she should look at the Space Coast Bird Festival site (so wish I was going to the festival, maybe next year). When I was there this week, I did Viera Wetlands (another entry about that forthcoming and Merritt Island). How about it, all you Florida insiders: tell katdoc where to go...birding that is.

I used this site when I was there for Christmas:

One of the local birders/photographers here in the NYC area named Phil Jeffrey posted reports of two trips he made to Florida in 2006. They're in a diary format so you have to read throught them. They also contain links to other FL birding resources. Hopefully this info isn't too old. The links are:

Have a great time!
I assume by your mention of convention rooms that you will be in the International Drive area... In that case, a couple of close spots are Tibet-Butler Preserve and the Disney Wilderness Preserve. The Florida Birding Trail site is a great resource, you should definitely look at it. If you do head to the Atlantic Coast, there are a couple of sites in S. Brevard County that you might want to check out-they're on the FBT site. At Merritt Island, be sure you ask at the visitor center if manatees have been spotted that day-while not feathered, they are pretty cool.
BC: Thanks for this post, and thank you, too, to Carey, Beth, and Sonia for the tips, as well as people who have posted more helpful advice at my site.
I'll be staying in the Buena Vista area, off International Drive, and am taking a morning off from the vet conference to do a "manatees and dolphins" excursion, so hope to get some birding in then.
After the conference is over, I am spending a few days with cousins who live in Ovieda, and hope to talk them into taking me out to some natural "hot spots." The FBT site has given me several ideas, as has the Space Coast Birding Festival web site. (I will actually be there during the festival, but didn't know about it soon enough to plan ahead.)
Thanks again! Birders are the most generous people!
