Hunkering Down

Current temperature: -13 degrees Fahrenheit. High temperature for today: -1 degree Fahrenheit. It's so cold, people are feeling sorry for house sparrows. I had lunch with a friend who works at Hubbard Broadcasting the other day, and I noticed that someone had been putting out some seed for the birds in the back of the parking lot.

God bless the person who fed the cold sparrows. I feel bad for the songbirds this time of year too.

It's been 5 years since I felt cold like that... I worked for a state agency in DE (Dept. of Ed) that kept a supply of seed for the birds when they needed it during wind chills below zero. The state paid for a fresh supplies. Wonderful.

The last time I was in Home Depot I heard birds singing inside...on the other hand my feeders in the St Cloud, MN, area were strangely quiet today. The exception was chickadees and nuthatches (white and red breasted). I'll have to wake up earlier tomorrow and keep an eye out...

I must say though, theres nothing like watching some 50+ eagles just carrying on with their daily lives at the river, to make one feel like a pansy for diving back into the warm car after less than a minute of taking pictures of those eagles. I'm so glad I braved the cold, even if it was just in small increments.

Poor sparrows. Now is a great time to have feathers.

Scott-- Haha! Eagles do tend to make one feel like a pansy. Amusing...musing. And great photographs. If you don't blog, you should because writing in an interesting, intelligent, and witty/humorous way and taking amazing photos is half the battle! The other half is to commit yourself to post daily (skipping a day or two is fine, but no more),
even when you have nothing to write...

I saw a house sparrow in the food court of the local mall (in NW NJ) last night. He was nonchalant, scouting for crumbs on the floor and on empty seats. I was so tempted to throw him some of my fried rice, but my husband objected.

I hope the sparrows get enough food. That is really cold!

I remember the blog you did earlier about the roller pigeon clubs vs raptors. It looks like Fish and Wildlife is coming down on the roller pigeon club at least a little according to this link:

Just thought I'd share!

Even house sparrows gotta eat. It's been cold here in PA too, in the high teens at night, low twenties in the day, so I've been a pansy as well and just stayed inside watching Winged Migration and reading.
