Soon To Be Leavin' On A Jet Plane

I forgot about this photo. The last time we were at Mr. Neil's, the mammals were out in full force. The cottontail rabbit in the above photo was kind of a bad apple. It chased the poor gray squirrel every time it came near. A few times, it charged the squirrel, even when it was keeping a good distance from the rabbit. The red squirrel would watch with interest from the top of the squirrel and even it decided not to take on the bunny.

We got some more snow and tomorrow I fly to Connecticut for the Bald Eagle Festival where it might be in the 30s (heat wave) and be rainy. But, I'll be hanging with the Swarovski guys and their booth has a heater--whoot. I was going to schedule a Birds and Beers, but I don't have my own vehicle at this event and am being shuttled around. But stop by and say hello if you're in the area.

So, I'm not sure if Non Birding Bill can make fun of me for being so into birds. Here is a recent conversation:

NBB: Oh cool, my movie arrived from NetFlix!

BC: What's it about?

NBB: It's a documentary about Helvetica.

BC: Wait, you're excited about a documentary about a font?

NBB: It's getting really good reviews!

BC: It's a font.

NBB: Parasitic Birds and Their Hosts?

BC: That was a great book.

Wow, I out-geek NBB this time!
I paid $10 to see Helvetica when the Walker was showing it. And it was definitely the best font documentary I have ever seen! Really, there's no way Comic Sans could pull off it's own movie like that.
And, like NBB, I also had to deal with spousal mockery about wanting to watch a documentary about a font...

I can out-documentary anyone at this point, I think. I've seen, was very excited about seeing, and rambled for WEEKS over the documentary Große Stille, Die (Into Great Silence). Yes, it was mostly silent but for the ambient noise of daily life. It was AMAZING. And no-one I know is even remotely interested. *sigh*

That said, a font documentary does sound boring, but I have odd tastes.

I just love those "only between spouses" conversations!

Have fun in CT

You may not have the same obsessions, but you do truly understand each other.
Equal opportunity taunting is a great thing!

Does a font trump a haircut? I watched a documentary about the Mullet. And yes, sometimes my wife looks at the DVDs as they arrive and just shakes her head.

The Helvetica doc is really nice: it's more about commercial and graphic design, esp. Modernism and Postmodernism as it relates to type. So if you're in to design, it's fun to listen to professionals bitch about what makes a font a good or bad design choice.

Oh, and I've seen "American Mullet," too: I liked how the one woman pointed out that it's a hairstyle used by both blue collar workers and lesbians.

Hmmm, I suspect my husband and I would probably enjoy watching the Helvetica documentary together. That will be an interesting conversation...

"Hey, honey, I heard about this movie, it sounds really interesting!"

"Hmmm?"

"It's about a a font!"

"Which one?"

"Helvetica."

"Ooooh, I'll throw in a pizza, want to get us something to drink?"

Yes, really, I expect this conversation to take place in a couple minutes, as he's coming through the door.
