Sounds Of Spring
Spent the day working my mojo with my new digital camera for digiscoping. I took this video through the scope of a female red-bellied woodpecker eating off of a suet log. It's not the most exciting footage ever, but I really wanted to capture the background sounds--some birds were singing territory songs even with snow still on the ground. You can hear a tufted titmouse, northern cardinal, blue jays, and crows (you might also here a few goldfinch chips and nuthatch yanks too).

Wow - that video is sooooo good. You would never know it was through a scope.
Now you need to find the drummming log of the ruffed grouse and get video of the drum. That would be awesome.
Thanks Sharon! I could have listened to that for hours! I've gone all homesick now.
What a pretty little woodpecker. And that was so much fun to listen to! I've been reading your blog for a few weeks now, and it has inspired me to FINALLY take up birding, which I've always wanted to do. Of course, until I rack up the money for binoculars and such, it's mostly by ear and naked eye...but that's all I need now, since I can enjoy your pictures. ;)
Thank you!
Hey, Evie,
welcome to the fold!
When I was in college I had not optics at all and went out to try an id birds. In some ways it can help because you'll notice birds in a different way. You might try to see if any local nature centers or bird clubs offer walks and call ahead to see if they have any binos to loan out or rent.
Very cool, birdchick! If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many is a video worth? Loved the nice birdsounds, too; made it specially nice.
That was lovely, Sharon (it's nice for me to hear the birds singing without the highway noise I always have in my backyard)
