Wednesday
I just had a weird, weird Wednesday. First I read a headline on CNN about a high school teacher in trouble for using a banned book in her classroom. Curious about what backwards school system that was, I clicked on the link and discovered it was my old high school: Perry Meridian High School. And that the teacher in trouble was my old Speech and Drama teacher. You can read about it here. I remember that when I was in school I wore a shirt that read, "Celebrate Freedom: Read A Banned Book" and listed a bunch of classics that had been banned. How did I not get suspended? Well, they did let one student wear a "Hitler World Tour" shirt so the clothing policy was lax.
It was another junco bonanza at banding class at Carpenter Nature Center. This time we could hear them singing all over. Most of the juncos were new birds, not too many retraps. I wonder if the birds that we got on Wednesday morning are from further south: Indiana? Texas? They're heading north towards their breeding grounds.
Here's a junco being let go--this new camera can get some really fun shots. We did see one song sparrow hopping around some of the ground traps and we were trying to use our mind control to get it to hop into the trap. It's funny, we'll get them in the summer, but it's been a few months so a different species is exciting. I'm sure by September we'll be dreaming of juncos again.
When I finished, I drove over to the Prescott Railroad Bridge to see if any peregrines were about and sure enough, one unbanded bird was in the sun. Right after I snapped this photo, it hopped off the rail and disappeared so I wasn't able to digiscope it. I looked around and noted a spotting scope attached to a car. I walked over and found that is was Bud Tordoff. He said the unbanded bird was a male and he was watching for the female who is banded to try and read her numbers. Always a great day to run into that Peregrine Guru.
Raptors were really on the move yesterday. On my way home, I passed several bald eagles chasing each other and even saw a talon grab. Red-tails were chasing each other, I saw two more peregrines doing a fly over and though they're not raptors I did see some turkey vultures catching a few thermals. Spring is definitely on the upswing.

Terrific about the Spring coming. Send some out here .. it is so cold the herons are not yet moving into the heronry .. several days late from normal years.
There is a live camera in the Heronry ...

during PDT daylight hours.
And almost no trace of snow!
Springtime indeed.
Walked to my local grocery store here in S.Portland ME yesterday & actually remembered my binoculars (so heavy when walking w/groceries). Our store is on a bay that empties into a creek on the side so at low tide there's a bunch of herring gulls as usual flapping in the water enjoying a bit of bathing. Suddenly they're all up & joining a hundred more all flying to the back of the store & over the bay all squawking like something big is up! Oh yeah, 3 for sure and maybe 5 bald eagles darting in among them shaking up the gull posse on a beautiful 47 degree day! Eventually the gulls headed off in various direction & the eagles headed north up the coast. Spring!! Today we're getting 6" of snow!

In general banning books is never a good idea. Is it age appropriate is relevant but thinking and drawing conclusions requires all sides of a story.
Hey! I had that t-shirt in high school too! I wore it to my job at a bookstore.
I find that this story about your former teacher makes my blood boil. This tactic was tried in Germany in the 30's it was offensive then and it still is today. Banning books is a terrible mistake.
Interesting! I wonder if the new falcons have taken over the nesting box. According to the info that Jackie Fallon sent out the falcons at the Prescott RR bridge are Butler, who is the male and is banded 19/N and an unbanded female. This was the info that they had as of March 16th, 2008. It is curious that the info has changed so dramatically in a couple of weeks.
Have you ever had any of your banded birds reported in?
That was Bryan's HS too; I can't remember if he had a Hitler World tour shirt or not. :-D
At least she's in trouble for something respectable. At my old HS a teacher got into trouble for filming "adult" videos with former students after hours in the tv studio at the school.

We do get reports of the birds when they are found dead and that info is kept at Carpenter. Sometimes we retrap birds. Last year we got in a goldfinch that was first banded seven years previous. Posts with retrap information are tagged with "retraps". I think if you do a google search on the blog under "retraps" some will come up.
Interesting. Most bands I've seen had no contact information. I wondered how you kept up with them.
