"Meat Raffles?"
Coming next week: bologna bingo.
Bad news when people have to rely on fate for meat...
Am a tad puzzle by the first line too.
I hope there wasn't a line-up of people waiting for their $1 weiner! (too weird--even for Minnesota!)
Even though I've never participated in a meat raffle I'm always a little surprised when folks from other states have never heard of them.
Here's the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meat_raffle
and a fun NY Times article about a New York woman visiting relatives and seeing her first meat raffle:

I will admit it - I'm from Illinois - not hoity-toity Chicago-land Illinois - down south, farmland, huntin', fishin', muddin' and cow-tippin' Illinois - and I also spent 8 years of my life building box ads for a small town newspaper and I have set more than my fair share of meat raffle ads.
Half a side of beef can go for quite a bit of money and is something that people in these parts regularly invest in at slaughter season, as well as whole hogs... you can even go to the local grocery and buy a whole hog, portioned out... but I digress...
A good meat raffle ticket can run pretty high.
Speaking of - I so wish I could find my pictures of my vacation many years ago where I found a place called Deb's Meat Emporium... alas, I didn't wander in there to see, but to this day I have visions of fancy lamps and scarves on the walls and pink walls with some kind of really soothing music playing in the background, while you grazed through racks of high quality "coteure" meats...
ah... but I have a weird imagination
Ahh $1 weiners. I once spent several minutes trying to explain to a SuperAmerica employee that their big sign outside that said Hotdogs, .99c was wrong. Do you really mean to sell them for less than a full penny I asked? No amount of explaining could take the confused look off his face. I guess basic math has been cut from schools.
go vegan tear down all the fences
just think of all the wildlife we'd have
