Bee Movies

Non Birding Bill filmed us installing our three pound packages of bees yesterday since Mr. Neil wasn't in town and this way he could get an idea of the hiving experience. It's in two parts:

Oh, it's a cliff hanger!

Dear Sharon and Bill:

This video makes it MUCH easier to understand what you're doing with the bees. Also, I Googled "how many bees in a pound?"

This web site:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/
How_many_bees_does_it_take_to_tip_
a_one-pound_scale

says 5500 to a pound.

Another Canadian beekeeping site said 6000-8000. So I think 6000 might be a good round figure to tell the curious.

I like the Nashville Warbler :) better but the beekeeping stuff is very cool.

Thanks

Dave

Thanks ever so much Birdchick, Lorraine and Bill.

Mr Neil will, I'm sure, one day write about a guy entering a beehive, now he's done so much research

I'm glad you guys liked the video--I'm so proud of NBB's video skills. And thanks for the info on a pound of bees. I think the bottom line is that there are a butt load of bees in a pound.

I'm glad you like the hair cut.

I really enjoyed doing the Bees, way way fun! There is such magic about them, sort of, hard to explain.

And now I can say I co-starred in a B-movie!

I've been following your adventures with the bees with something akin to morbid fascination, considering that one bite from a bee can kill me. The sound of the bees swarming was like a horror movie for me - its a sound that usually means RUN. Its just so interesting though. Maybe its because a bee can kill me that they've always held my interest.
Thank you so much for letting us join in on your bee keeping journey.

I might have missed this but who decorated the hive boxes? I like them!

I prefer the queen cages I've seen in the uk, there's a hole in one end which is full of fondant which is capped off to prevent access from the outside. To release the queen it's just a case of removing the capping and wedging the cage between the top bars of a couple of frames, the other bees eat the fondant and release.

No chance of her legging (should that be winging) it during the final phases :)

Here via Mr. Neil's blog. This is so fascinating. I am learning to beekeep (on a small scale) here in the UK and I've loved reading and watching you with your bees.

Hey, Mr. Neil said to see you for bee info. We happen to have a swarm nesting in our outside wall. We have made their entrance much smaller in hopes that they will move their hive somewhere not in our walls. How do you know when they have moved the hive? Do they all disappear? We really don't want to seal them up in the wall, but it's been three weeks and they still seem to be going in and out.

My husband would like to set up a hive on our property (1/2 acre in the city) but I'm afraid we need much more land to support them.

Your videos are wonderful! Thanks so much!

cdmclean -

you need the help of a professional bee colony removal service. If the bees have been there for three weeks, they're probably building new comb and are quite content. Even if you get the bees out, you need to remove the wax or the aroma will attract another swarm sometime down the road.
