We saw a totally funky oriole today on the Glendalough field trip. There should only be
Baltimore orioles here, but this one kind of looked like a
hooded oriole (although not quite).

So, this bird is either a hybrid between the two, a second year male oriole who hasn't quite molted into his adult plumage, or sometimes female orioles attain male plumage as they grow older--is this just an old female?
Any thoughts.

I'd vote for a 2nd year changing male bird.
It is difficult to tell from the two photos given, but a check with the Pyle key points most closely to second-year male Baltimore Oriole. This is via the wonderfully vague terminology "black feathers increasingly present" in the cheeks and throat from November through August.
Hope all is well in Detroit Lakes! Read minnesotabirdnerd.blogspot.com for Roger's account of our amazing day at Carver Park...
hey Sharon, when you have a minute (haha) come by archi's site and say goodbye. she died this morning :(
she was the bunny that, with clyde, started it all for me, my best, favorite bun. if it weren't for her i wouldn't have found disapproving rabbits! i'm glad i did!
blessings,
