Birds and Beers June 2008
Birds and Beers is back! It will be held at Merlin's Rest this Thursday, June 19 from 6pm - 8pm. Birds and Beers is an informal gathering of birders of all abilities--if you're interested in birds, you're invited. You can meet other birds--maybe a carpool buddy, talk about why people get weird on bird listservs, ask about where to find target birds, share cool research projects you might be working on, ask a bird feeding question, share life lists--the sky is the limit. It's low key and it's fun.

Thought you might like to see these photos of banding baby eagles http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/gallery?Avis=B7&Dato=20080616&Kategori=PHOTOGALLERIES&Lopenr=806160801&Ref=PH
If the link doesn't work go to www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com and look at the photo gallery.
We watched the nest last year when neither chick survived before we moved to AZ. It's nice to know two babies survived this year.
Drink one for me!

Talk amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic. Cats are evil bird killers and should be banned from the outdoors. Discuss.
In all seriousness....as we all now cats are considered the 2nd or 3rd largest source of anthropogenic bird mortality in the US (if not the world). Yet birders and bird listservs are largely silent. Is this a good thing? Is there something more we can do? Maybe ferals are limited by the cold weather up north, but I'm seeing LOTS more ferals in the southern states, especially coastal towns. Feral cats have their own advocacy group which seems to believe that they have a place in the outdoors and seem to disregard their toll on native birds. Damn I wish I could be there to drink and bitch.
Okay, I'm done
I plan on talking birds and drinking a few tall strongbows.
