Can You Guess The Bird In the Chimney?

I got an email from Yvette's Inner Geek asking for a bird ID. I looked at the photos on her blog and it took about ten seconds, but I figured out what it is. Can you figure out what she had in her chimney?

Going by those feather shafts, I'd have to say Northern Flicker (of the red-shafted variety).

Good to hear it got out!

I'm going to have to second the red-shafted northern flicker.

Isn't it awesome that we know enough about birds that we can look at just a few obscured parts of a bird, but see the shafts of feathers and know what it is.

I just think that's cool that birders can do that.

I'm still trying to convince my friends that birders are cool people.

They're not convinced. Me walking into a tree while trying to point out a red-tail to them didn't really help much either.

...I think we're cool people.
