Duck Stamp Winner

Above is the image you can expect to see on the upcoming Duck Stamp. It's a long-tailed duck (aka oldsquaw) by Joshua Spies.

The Canada geese over the striped snowy field would've been my pick. I thought the winner was a photo at first.

I'm no art critic, but the back bird looks a little wooden...

Seriously, though, what a cool bird to choose for this year's stamp.

To me it looks like carved and painted decoys photographed floating on the water. Look at the seam where the head of the bird in the back connects. Almost like the one in the back is an antique decoy while the one in front is new. The water certainly looks like a photo, though that doesn't mean anything. Altogether it seems lie a bit of an odd choice.

The back bird IS a decoy and it's a painting, an intrepretation of reality. The long tail is may favorite duck to watch & it'll be in Maine waters soon. Beautiful!

A 15-year-old from Amoret, Mo., won the 2006-2007 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest last week. Rebekah Nastav's acrylic painting of a Redhead, called "Morning Swim," will go on sale June 1 for $5. The funds go toward environmental education programs.Previous winners include Adam Nisbett of St. James, Mo., who recently earned the Overall Young Birder of the Year Award for the 14- to 18-year-old group in the American Birding Association's annual competition

Wow...looks just like a photograph, and I am pretty sure the one in the back is supposed to look wooden.

I don't understand how any of that artist's paintings are NOT photos after looking over his web site. They are unreal.
