Holy Crap! Goldfinch Retrap Info From Mr. Neil's

Back in September, we had a great day of banding birds at Mr. Neil's. One of the birds we got was an already banded goldfinch--but not banded by any of us. Well, it turns out that the bird was banded in 2004 near Springfield, Illinois by Vernon Kleen! That makes this bird at least 4 years old and how the heck did it get over 450 miles north?

I'm just guessing, but I suspect it flew. 8-)

It heard about the bees at Mr. Neil's and wanted to come check out the hives.

Anonymous, you're too funny!

How exciting to find a 4 year old Goldfinch! I wouldn't have thought they moved about that much either. Or lived that long! What a thrilling find!

Oooh, how exciting!

Up in Montreal, especially in the fall, we rarely get birds that have been banded elsewhere, just because there are so few banding stations nearby and further north. It's at least a few hundred km on either side, as far as I know, to the next banding stations. Our most exciting ones have been ones that we've banded ourselves and the recaught a year, two years, up to four years later.

I'm jealous! :)

Isn't that cool? Is that a pretty advanced age for a goldfinch? I should start watching the multitudes at my feeders to see if I can spot any bands.
