Holy Crap, Flying Coot
Only in Florida.
I just do a a blog entry about never seeing coots in flight and what happens? Tonight I'm driving around Merritt Island NWR and check it out:
A coot flies in front of my car. Go figure!

LOL - was a good question though.
I've never seen a rail flying around either.
Congrats on promoting your nemesis to be on your life list. (Painted Bunting). I just heard of another place where they are supposed to be found. Oakland Nature Preserve in the west of Orlando. I will go and check it out.
Cheers, Klaus
1) I assume you mean "coot in flight". Although "Fighting Coots" would be a good team name...
2) Was that an old coot?
I've lived right above a lake that is constantly hosting coots and now that you mention it I have never seen any in flight...other than scooting over the surface.
Nice shot.
Alright smartie, let's see a photo of a flying penguin next.
I don't know why but I never see coots fly on the East Coast and frequently see them fly on the West Coast. Perhaps an unrecognized subspecific difference?
