How Many Birds Are In This Photo?

Taken on a brisk Tuesday evening in Florida. How many birds do you see in this photo?

3; possibly a fourth in upper right corner.

You asked two different questions, that can have two different answers. 8-)

And don't forget to count the reflection of the Killdeer.

I'm thinking that is Wilson's Snipe, not American Woodcock.

I've got coffee, so I'm gonna go with two. Even though I'm still squinting at it and second-guessing my guess.

I'm not good at IDs, so I won't even try....

There is a wading bird (and its reflection, which I did not count), a nesting bird "above" it and to the right a little, to the right of it is a standing bird (mate?), below that in the water or on a tiny island, and partially out of the right frame is a swimming ("duck-like"?) bird.

I keep thinking there may be another bird farther back in the grass, but my poor eyes don't know if they see it or not.

Should have looked at my field guide when I blurted out woodcock. I don't get out much, but thanks for letting us know that it was a snipe! The one time we took our friend snipe hunting in the dark (as a joke in high school), we of course didn't see any! We couldn't believe he fell for it. If I remember right, you give the gullible hunter a paper bag full of rocks and have him shake it or beat it to lure in the snipe, then when he's hard at it, you ditch him and make him hike back to town. We were rotten. He got the best of us though...he was a cross country runner and beat us back to town, with us even driving!

As a kid, I was always confused about the snipe hunt because there's actually a snipe.

So, there are two birds, one killdeer and one Wilson's snipe. Okay, people who saw three or more...what are you drinkin' when reading the blog. I want some.

;)

OMG Sharon, I had the same thing when I went to camp one summer. The counselors took us kids out for a snipe hunt. I was spoiling it for everyone by whining that there really WAS a creature called a snipe, and who were they trying to kid!?

I'd like to see the original photo because it looks to me like there are three birds on the bank (one nesting, one looking to the left (the one circled), one on the right edge (truncated, actually) looking right (head not in the frame).

In the water there is one clearly (one of the two circled) and one partiall7 truncated on the right edge, looking left.
