I’ve been debating about whether or not to post this video, but I’m going back to my number one rule for the blog: Would I personally find this interesting? The answer is yes:
What’s interesting is that if you are a birder and watch this, you might be thinking to yourself, “Well, there really aren’t that many minorities in birding anyway. What’s up with that?”
Something that desperately needs to be fixed.
Non Birding Bill sent me another bird related video which I think is hilarious (and you will too if you are a fan of David Attenborough). It’s a bit profanity laden, so if you are at work or check the blog with your kids, just keep that in mind. Headphones or viewing this alone would probably be best. Nice! Putting one stereotype to bed by perpetuating another.
That said, it’s still pretty funny.
Nice parody.
And as for "Well, there really aren't that many minorities in birding anyway. What's up with that?"… that's why the Nov/Dec issue of WildBird includes a photo essay by Dudley Edmondson based on his "Black & Brown Faces" book.
Awesome, I heart Dudley Edmondson, his photos can be downright artistic!
Well, this brownie loves the birds!
Needs to be fixed?
So do you propose that there should be financial incentives in order to attract “minority” birders? Science can afford to attract girls (many of whom are not quite science quality, by the way), but birdwatchers are not typically winning massive defence grants, for example.
I don’t know if money is the answer.
I think a big part of the issue is that some cultures do not get the same exposure to the natural world as others.
You could be right, and those birding festivals are quite pricey, by the way.
Although, it is really hard not to be an urban birder these days.
