Part of my plan for coming to Indianapolis was a surprise 70th birthday party for my mom. My brothers and sisters got the party set up while mom and I were at the workshop. My sister Robin had someone make a cake in the shape of Mom’s favorite books (above). One of the books included was the Sibley guide.
When the party was over, I asked if I could eat Sibley…which now as I type this sounds really, really weird and I feel like I need to take a shower. Anyway, Mom obliged.
About as heavy in the stomach as it is in the field.

oh, this is cool! A cake that looks like books! who made it, and out of what? I see paper labels, but are the covers marzipan or something similar? I’m a bookbinder and my sister-outlaw is a librarian, so all the more interest!
Oh, I love that cake!! But the best part of the post is the look of parental concern on your mom’s face as she watches over your shoulder — priceless!
That is really an awesome cake.
Oh, and your Mom doesn’t look ANYWHERE in the vicinity of 70!
Oh, your mom looks a little worried!
Nice, I love it
The books were made of cake, the book binding was fondent (spelling?) and the labels were sugar composite and edibile was well. I am Sharon’s sister and no you don’t have to pity me. One of my employees, Ashure, made the cake for us. She does it on the side. She is amazing. I gave her the concept and she ran with it. It was incredible.
I’m joining the “I want a cake just like that” club. By the way, what were your mom’s other favorite titles? The ever-curious librarian in me, I suppose.
Jodyth,
The other titles were, The collected works of Edna StVincent Millay, The Universe in a Nutshell by Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein biography by Ronald Clark, Macbeth by good old Will, Pride & Prejudice by Austen, Science & Health by Mary Baker Eddy. I have many other favorites, too many for cakes. I think War & Peace is phenomenel I’m a real fan of Steinbeck, Faulkner, and poets too numerous. My favorite anthology is Louis Untermeyers A treasury of Great Poems english and american.
That is the cutest cake I’ve ever seen.
Nikki, I like your taste in books! Millay’s one of my favorite poets, Macbeth is so very quotable, Pride & Prejudice is part of my DNA (mostly because of Colin Firth), and biographies and nonfiction keep my curiosity alive.
If you really like Pride & Prejudice, there’s a choose your own adventure book called Lost in Austen by Emma Campbell Webster based on it. I discovered I’m really bad at being Elizabeth Bennet. I kept dying. It’s a hoot, though!
