Sampling Of San Diego Beach Birds

How many species can you see in this video clip?

Thanks for the reminders about Daylight Savings Time! I’m doing a pelagic trip on Sunday, keep your fingers crossed, I’m might get to see some brown boobies (and maybe even a blue-footed booby)!

    Four?

I keep looking for the grebe they mention, but don’t see it. Did I miss the grebe?

  2. Jenny C says:

I am in love with this video. I want to see black skimmers SO BAD! I’m going to FL at the end of the month, and hope to see some there. When that gull walks right into the middle and stops just kills me.

  3. Pandionna says:

I love the way that gull comes in toward the end. “‘SCUSE me, what’s going on here? Whatcha doin’? Can I get in on this?”

  4. Stacy says:

I agree w/Pandionna; The gull entering frame; stands right in the middle ‘Hey; I’m right HERE, do you see me? Do you see me NOW?” LOL

  5. Pam says:

I see four. The big flock is some kind of skimmer. There is some kind of sandpiper with a long bill. The swimmers are the grebes mentioned in the audio and the gull I think is a herring gull.

  6. Kyle says:

Lets go with Black Skimmer, Brant, Willet, and Herring Gull

  7. Jonathan says:

Does anyone else think it might be a Western Gull? The mantle looks darkish to me.

The gull is my favorite part of that video! I love how it stands exactly where my scope is aimed, “I’m here, I’m what you wanted a shot of all along.”

Jess, the grebe didn’t make it into the shot, it was further down shore.

Jonathon is correct, the gull is a western gull. The other birds are black skimmer, willet, and brant.

Jenny C – You’re gonna LOVE skimmers, I hope you get great looks in FL!
