Kyle,

that is hilarious. I've often hummed that tune but never got past the "Oh the birder and the hunter should be friends."

Well played, sir, well played.

When you have a nation that is in a state of turmoil, people aren't going to put birds first.

"Questions are still in my head: Can these groups really work together in the long term? Can we keep the momentum going?"

The answer is probably no. The Minnesota Breeding Atlas project has several organizations involve and they have a very tough time communicating with each other.

Duluth, MN

Sharon, I have to admit to also wondering what was the point. Something like this will likely NOT get the average person's attention, and it will only be read by those already interested or invested in the cause. So thanks for your review, and for pointing out the suggested projects. I'm definitely interested enough now to go in and read the darned thing myself.

Of course, regarding your comments on the MIA Ducks Unlimited, all I could think of was this:

♫ Oh, the birder and the hunter should be friends.
Yes, the birder and the hunter should be friends.
One group's out to spot the owls,
The other shoots at waterfowls,
But that's no reason why they can't be friends. ♪

Yeah, I know, I'm warped.
Hi, Sharon,
I appreciate your take on the State of the Birds report, and I like your emphasis on the "what we can do" part. I skimmed the online summary too, specifically looking for information on urban birds, and wrote about that aspect of it on the Minneapolis Observer Web site (http://www.mplsobserver.com). There was, at least on that page, a mention of hunters and hunting groups and how they help bird populations and habitat.
