my hubby prefers the pith helmet veil....the soft hood w/collapsible folding veil feels as though it slips & bees are all over your head & face. he felt that a hat was necessary to force the veil up to keep it out of his face...and since he sometimes has facial hair, it felt almost as thought the facial hair was touching the soft veil which he felt was kind of creepy. Thank you for posting your bee stories...very enjoyable.

Thanks again for another entertaining and informative look into bee-keeping. Every since I've started reading your blog (at first only expecting birding info), I've looked at bees differently and more closely. And your red hair is bee-yoo-ti-ful!!

Sharon, your red hair is CUTE!!! Totally works with your coloring, but so did the blond.

Poor Hans! I think he would have preferred wacky sexual to stinging insects.

We've only had the jackets that we wear with pants and tuck our pant legs into our socks, and it's been a total success. I've been stung once working with the hives - had lifted a heavy super from the hive and set it on the ground, using my legs / not my back. Stood up quickly and caught a bee between the tops of my thighs. OW OW OW OW. And *not* an easy stinger to remove! Glad for everyone that Mr. Neil didn't get stung!

Beautiful capped honey on that frame. And great pictures and post, thank you for sharing! I wish your hives the best of luck through the fall and winter.

Great post. I have been debating on whether to feed my bees this fall. I don't want them to make a lot of bees that they have to feed so I have been holding off for now. Looks like we have the same type of hive (all mediums).

I'd forgotten that my dad used to do the flick move to get bees off of frames from his hives when I was very young until I watched your video of Neil doing it.

And FWIW, I like the red hair. :-)

I can't believe that neither Quiche or Neil blogged about the ahhhh, unfortunate fashion accessory on his jeans! Every time I've watched the video of him squatting calmly in the midst of all those bees I've shuddered! Brave.
