My neighbor gave me a deer ribcage from a deer he butchered a few years ago. I hung it in one of the trees in my backyard and it was picked clean by spring.
Good luck with finding Golden Eagle 42--can't wait to see your pics of that eventful day.

Reads like an adventure, an odyssey !
Hunters that we know deliberately leave not only the gut pile from field dressing their deer, but also the carcass itself after butchering so that not an edible scrap is wasted.
Most hunters are great ecologists. And, hey, they usually know their birds pretty well also.
My husband always saves all of the tallow for our feeding station.

Good stuff. I'm fascinated by Golden Eagles in the area. Those photos aren't all that gross. Did you see my photos from when we opened up and cleaned out the inside of a deer's stomach to make samples for our deer ecology class. Now THAT was nasty.

Mark has on an orange hat and you can't even see the photos of me. Of course I wear bright colors during deer season. What you think, I'm crazy?

Thanks for the post & pictures. I'm in the middle of Mind of the Raven by Bernd Heinrich right now and am just reading how they are trying to study range and feeding habits of the young ravens. They've been hauling roadkill & deer carcasses into the woods to set up feeding stations and building natural blinds to hide in all day to watch. You're starting to think like the birds deciding where the feeding stations should be...in the woods, out of the woods. Thanks for sharing the day with us!
And definately wear orange for heavens sake!!!
