Thanks for the info!

Do I take it, though, that the (mild) hazard from this aged seed is only to the human buyer's person and household, not to the birds' health?

Great infomation. I've had problems in the past with pests in a birdseed sack. Many stores where I live, deep south, keep the sacks in hot warehouses during the summer months. This may increase pest production. The Wild Bird Store refrigerates their seed until it is bought, but it is more expensive.

Thanks Tony--I never even thought to blame bugs for the dust. I poured the last of the cheap seed bird today, and I didn't see a lot of holes, but it was the end of the bag so who knows... I'm glad to be able to refill with my "preferred" seed starting tomorrow. Never would have figured I'd ever have a preferred bird seed :-)

Nicole, look closely at your seed and see if it has tiny holes in the husks.(Mentioned in article) Larva eating away at the seed will create a dust/powder like you describe.

I bought a 20 lb. bag of black oil sunflower seeds at a big box hardware chain. The price was the best anywhere. The seeds are coated with a very fine dust. The birds don't mind, but when the seeds get wet the dust turns into a sticky goo that gums up the feeder.

Next time I'll test a small package for quality before buying a big bag.

I bought some big box store sunflower seed the other day, since it's long drive to my preferred bird store. It was totally dusty, dirty and full of sticks, so dusty that I wind up covered with a fine coat of grit when I fill my feeders. The birds seem ok with it, but I won't be making the cheap seed a habit. I also wondered how much of a deal I was getting when I was paying for so many little sticks and stones.
