I saw this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tfangel/5269133448/) in my tree being chased off by some crows, and thought it was a hawk, but now i’m not sure. I didn’t get as good a look at it’s head, as it’s in the bush most of the time.
It’s definitely an accipiter. It looks like the head is a bit flat which makes me think “Cooper’s hawk” but the spots on the chest are thick and rounded which leads me to “sharp-shinned.”
Ah, thank you. I’m still very new at identifying birds, it’s the subtle things that throw me that i don’t know to look for. I got the audubon guide, both print and for my ipad, but it gets confusing when they have so many features similar.
That’s a bald eagle??
